Have you ever stuck your knuckles in a spinning lathe? You don't have to answer that one. Have you ever donated flesh in the learning of your craft? Don't answer that either. I have a Hightower lathe that I love. I haven't stuck my hand in there in a while. I still have very close calls. I had an idea I would like to share. It's called "Purdman's Knuckle Saver."
From a knuckle head to all other knuckle heads.I do not know if any of you have thought of this or not. Here it is guys. Only $5.95 plus shipping. You only have to pay if you can't find a Ball Jar lid! They come to your door in any color you desire!:D
If this has been done or you think it is a dumb idea, let me know. I can take it. However, if you don't have one and you know what I am talking about, order one today, a Ball Jar lid that is.;) Oh, one size fits all if you put it behind the lathe pins.:D
Purdman:cool: Preserving knuckles one at a time!!

I've stuck a 6" file in my palm about 1/2" deep....twice. Now I use wooden handles.

So, uh, you gonna order the Purdman Knuckle Saver? :D
Thanks for the tip Hal, you always come thru in a pinch!
Peace, Purdman:cool:

I'll buy one if you can find a ball lid with a 16" diameter.

knuckle saver

thats a great idea....i usually run the lathe backwards when close to the chuck don't know if it would work on cues ,guess it could try and unscrew the shaft from the arbor...but works when somthings chucked in the lathe...

so, what have you got for a real moron like me who has forgotten to take out the chuck pin, not once but twice before turning it on?
M.C.

put a spring on your chuck wrench....it's a pain but safer for sure...don't sweat it ..i think anyone that's run a lathe much has done that....

!!!!!!!!!!!

Paint chuck key florescent orange on Hightower glued mine in 4" of broom hanle painted bright red easier to use an easy to find.

That's easy Hal, cut a basketball in half. I did a lot of core drilling in my life. That is a hollow tube with a crown with diamonds used to drill holes in concrete and rebar. They are water cooled. We had to drill thru the ceiling one time and everybody was stumped. You know, all that concrete laden water coming down on ya. Well, cut a basketball in half, put a hole in the center that fits over the part that the bit attached to and whamo! The water flew all around the room but not on the drill or the driller.;)
Didn't even get a bonus there.

Hey Purd,

Great idea. Only problem is that I usually do the knuckle buster when I have the shaft tightened into the chuck, and I am sizing a ferrule or shaping a tip. Do you have any ideas for that?

Thanks,
Mike

What would you think about using a plastic cottage cheese type container put on like Purd's only having the tub cut down and slid on over the chuck jaws!? :)

What knuckles?

You mean you still HAVE knuckles? Ony time I still get caught is when I am trying to get something that dropped beneath the chuck, I know, I should leave it 'til I turn off the lathe. Sometimes common sense eludes all of us!

Thanks for the project Mike. I will get right on it. I will get back to ya soon unless somebody else gets their creative juices flowing first.
Peace, Purd ( I like that, rhymes with turd. Ya know, I have been one for most of my life. Glad that journey is over. Ya know what they say, "The top of one mountain is the bottom of another." I am working on it Bro!

Mike, krbsailing hit the nail on the head. This worked for me. I just used an old shaft to demonstrate. This doesn't cover the chuck jaws but I didn't get close to my knuckles.
Purd:cool:
What do you think?
Thanks krbsailing, you da man!!!

Gotta save the rest of our knuckles!

Hey guys,

My thought was that plastic might be a little more forgiving on the knuckles  :D :p

Here's a couple pics of my take on the "knuckle guard" :D

One problem I see with the bottom of the coke bottle or other item like that is you can't open and close the chuck as easy. The jar tops a more dangerous than the jaws as that is a meat slicer you have rotating there. That might acutally cut a finger off. The other negative thing I see is, I almost never hit my knuckes when cleaning shafts. And those require a lathe pin to slip on. It is the close up work like ferrules and joint and such that your hands are up close for that gets you whacked. I think the ideas are all good starts and thought provoking, but I have not seen one I would want to manufacture. A stretchable foam ring around the jaws and slightly over the front might be an option. Keep playing with it and someone might come up with a winner. I don't mean to be so negative, but I am encouraging you to think it through some more.

GEEZWIZ Chris,

And I had all these cottage cheese containers lined up in the garage for a little trim  :D  ;) :p :)

It's a worthy cause!

No doubt about it.....it's a worthy cause Chris -- I scrape up my knuckles more times than not since I do alot of my work late at night  :D

Best of luck to anyone who comes up with a winning idea ;)

......as another option, I've thought about painting the sides of the jaws on the chuck a flourescent (bright) color which may (or not) help me from keeping my knuckles from slowing down that headstock

Whoever comes up with the right idea can make them to sell to all of us themselves, or I will give them one of the first ones I have made for coming up with the idea.

Chris, the idea was mine and I give it freely. The Ball Jar lid works just fine for me. I wasn't necessarly talking about cleaning shafts. When I finish the first four or five inches with clear coat, I need to wet sand and polish. With the sharp edge of the Ball Jar faceing the jaws, it is very safe. I am just trying to save our brothers knuckles! Everything I do is not to make a profit. This is just the beginning of my creative juices to flow. I said that I really like the lathe you made for me and have endorsed your machines for 7 years now. I reccomend them to everyone who ask about it. I am a fan my friend, one of your biggest. Thank you for all you do and may God Bless you and yours.
Peace, Don (Purdman) Purdy
PS: Do ya want to buy a Ball Jar lid? My lid covered home made tomato basil sauce. The best part of the whole idea was eating the sauce!;)
