Laughing about the general opinion of "new posters" playing abilities

TATE said:
I usually assume if someone is posting here, they are a pretty good player. I am usually surprised to hear someone is a "C" player and posting here, but I like it and respect it. In fact, some of the players who rate themselves low have a surprising amount of knowledge about the game.

I admire anyone who has the guts to share their knowledge in such a knowledgeable crowd. I never look at the number of someone's posts, but at their content. Plus, the more you hang around, the more you know who is what speed. I do admit I give more weight to someone's opinion who I consider an expert player.

I am impressed with the number of good players on this board. When I say good players, I am not just talking about "A" players (there are a ton of "A" players here) but regional players who can play in events like the U.S. Open and compete at that level.

In my book, you are what you post. If you can't play a lick but you understand the game and contribute to the boards, well, I respect you. If you play like god but can't make much sense of it, you're not going to get too much attention from me.

I don't want to be rude, but I find your name, Predator Hater, kind of offensive since I love Predator shafts.

Chris

I found this to be a very good, quality post. This is the way I believe most people on the board think.

I also find the name slightly offensive, but not soo much because of the company(not a fan) but because of the blatant negativity towards a popular brand. A name like that is just asking to get on people's nerves and start arguements.

TATE... I am usually surprised to hear someone is a "C" player and posting here said:
Hmmmm, why? I would suspect there are a lot of 'C' players posting here. Though, of course, what a 'C' player is has never been adequately defined.

PredatorHater... that name gives me a negative impression of you from the start. Predator makes a quality product that all may not like but why base your name off your distaste for it? That's ridiculous.

Your first comment you bash Grady Matthews & Billy Incardona as commentators. There is a right way and a wrong to critique someone and I feel yours was not. They are two well respected people who actually posts on this forum and for you to speak of them negatively as your first post... dumb.

And about the person who you think was sarcastic in his response... any person with any sense would see that he didn't word that being sarcastic...

Hmm... maybe change your name and start over? :)
Thanks for the negative rep vote because I voiced my opinion on Grady and Incardona's skill as commentators. I didn't say they were lousy human beings. I have all of Grady's tapes, so I must like him. I like Billy as well. I just don't care to hear them do commentary on games. I like Jim Wych - he's a friend of mine. Did you see his name in my top 3? Nope.

I certainly wouldn't give you a negative rep over it, but my opinion is exactly opposite of yours. Jim Wych is a mediocre commentator IMHO. I think Grady & Bill are very good commentators, though I don't think they are good together (too much competitive nature there), or weren't in the past at least.

You said that Grady was drier than a rice cake and the sport doesn't need him... And that was your first post. I can't wait for all the other quality posts we have to look forward to!

Seems to me you are wanting some validation of some sort. So.. welcome. You felt the need to list your qualifications (BCA, league rankings, etc.) so you do take it pretty serious. Just kick back, enjoy the sarcasm, learn (even from the people that play worse than you), and throw in .02 occasionally. By the way, all of those rankings really doesn't hold a lot of water with me. Depends where you are, strength of the league, etc. There aren't many players, in my area, that are as high as they go in APA that I don't give weight to, if I can get them to play. So, now you are formally welcomed.

How about this:
Hello, welcome to the forum. Please enjoy your stay. Take from it what you can. :)

Oh, PULEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE.

Just a "newbie rant".
APA stats - 8ball 7, 9ball 8
BCA ranking - 10
..................but still just a hack. I hope Pat Johnson will be around to correct me some more.

Two obervations:

1. Anyone who lists their APA ranking gets a spot from me.

2. You care WAY too much what a bunch of faceless internet forum posters think of your "skill."

In the BCA league I played in, we had a few of the top players in the country in the league. Eric H, Mike Roberts, DJ McGinley - ranked as 11s. I get a one ball spot from guys that have beat Strickland, Archer, Engert, and so forth with no weight. I think the strength of our league was OK. Considering at the BCA 8 and 9 ball amateurs, two of our "league" players won the open events. I agree that league ratings can be a little off, but I have never seen a 7 or 8 in our league (in Canada) that couldn't put racks together. They don't just give that handicap out for nothing up here - you earn it.

I just read a reply to one of my statements, to which I was informed that I should "listen to member ABC because he play a lot, and plays well".

Just noticing a general lack of respect for new posters on this group. I know there ends up being the odd McWhorter or FastLarry, but for the most part, we're all people that love pool, and love to talk about it and play it.

Here's my problem - there seems to be an "old boys" network on here that determine who knows and who knows not. If you take exception to one of their comments or opinions, you are labelled a "newbie" or a "pool retard", when none of you know our speeds or who we are.

I don't gamble, so some of you would label me as yellow, or a fish. I don't live in a pool hall, so you'd say I'm not a die hard. I don't play with a custom cue (although I used to and still do build the odd one), so I'm just another banger. But what I am is a decent player. And I hate hearing the voices of newsgroup "elders" saying "there, there - one day you MIGHT know something about pool after listening to us for the next 3 years".

I am new to AZ, I have had my share of ups and downs. But overall my experience on here has been good. I have posted some dumb post with stupid sales tactics. I have figured out in a hurry from alot of people on here what each other expect. I can only imagine what some people go thru on here. But most of those people bring it upon themselves. If a person has a little bit of knowledge about billiards in general they should be ok.

What could someone possibly "go through" on an internet forum that you can "only imagine?"

"Oh no! Look at the little letters on the screen! They're insulting me! They don't respect me! *cry*"

Did the "old boys network" reach through your computer screen and slap your face? Did a "veteran poster" digitally steal your Prince of Pool autographed cue case?

You don't know what pain is until you've played Tony Chohan for a glass bottom boat.

Shawn, I just read your opening post on this thread and just want to suggest that you chill a bit. I like to respond to threads before reading other's posts because I don't want to be influenced by what they say. If I am redundant with my post, so be it...

If you hear any arrogance on this forum, some of it may be imagined. By that I mean, the written word is not so well communicated on this forum or any other for that matter. Some feelings are left out unintentionally as it takes extra effort to express some sentiments. I am sure there is some arrogance on this forum and other forums and it is the nature of the medium I am afraid.

For the most part, posters reap what they sow.

The forum does have seasoned posters who have earned their position in the heirarchy if one exists. But most have earned their position of respect because they have shown themselves to be responsible, capable and knowledgeable. A few posters go out on a limb from time to time and get called for shenanigans as one poster calls it and that is just the way it is.

A post is read by people of different abilities, different backgrounds, by people in good moods, by people in bad moods, by nice people and by not so nice people. Here on the Internet it is far easier to be not so nice especially if you hide behind an alias screen name without having to be held responsible for your comments so on occasion you may get some small-minded person, wanting to stand a little taller, shouting out unappreciative remarks and such. At the same time there are people who are knowledgeable, capable but perhaps do not share the same type of patience with others as you and I might and they may come off a bit abrupt. While it isn't easy, get to know some of the posters, overlook some of the pissiness that sometimes gets expressed here, realizing that people aren't always in a good mood and that sometimes what they write is not all that they would have preferred to have said. Some of the posters are far more valuable than they might first appear to be.

It is easy to go over your own post a couple of times and find fault with what you have written let alone someone else's post. That doesn't mean that you have to eat water buffalo dung either.

Thanks for posting your thoughts and feelings. Hang in there.

That really helps your game. We have a bunch of sandbaggers here in Raleigh. We also have a bunch of players who are overrated. As far as your guys beating Archer, Strickland and so forth.. they don't want a daily dose of it. Here in the Carolinas, action and players are fierce. Let's just begin with
Cliff Joyner
Harold Dollar
Archer
Tony Watson
BJ Ussery
Sparky Ferrell
Tony Watson
Mike Gulyassy
Shannon Daulton
Earl the Pearl
Jaybird
Coltrain
I could go on and on.
All the great players will tune you up. You are lucky to have good players around you all of the time. Most of our "greats" are on the road the majority of the time.

KY BOY.......no disrespect intended Gary.......and I admit to often having a warped sense of humour.............but in a forum community which tends to be populated by macho and competitive bears and given some of the popular uses for that particular gel, KY BOY has got to be one of the bravest user names I have ever seen:eek: :)

I can't give you any more rep right now but you made me belly laugh. :D :o

Shawn,

You will quickly find out that there are lots of newbies on this forum. I am one as well. I have truly enjoyed my start here and with the exception of a few people who just lurk to stir the pot there are tons of not only knowledgeable but really great people on this forum. I have some advice from newbie to newbie.

1) Use IMHO as much as possible. Opinions are allowed and rarely scorned if voiced politely.
2) Do not get involved in any of the threads involving woofing between certain people here...give it an hour you will figure who they are.
3) Do not attack anyone. Period. If you need to say something to someone that is attacking, send a PM.
4) Give out rep points when you feel they are deserved. Create your personna one member at a time.
5) Understand no matter how talented you are there are many, many more players here much more talented than you or I.

I look forward to reading and sometimes engaging the threads on this site. I am proud of the rep points I have acquired in what I feel is a short time. I wish you the best in your beginning with the best billiards forums site around.

PS. I play Predator. PS. See you at the Canadians?

Point proved. Thanks for the reply Tristan. Now if cplayer replies Shawn will get to fully understand my point.

You see this forum as a stew, I see it as rice. We are all equal grains each with something to give. However, stir, and all the rice is disturbed. Add what you will and let the others do as they will.
