Layered tip performance

I prefer tall cue tips however several friends state that they like them for the superior feel when they are much thinner, basically at the point I would consider them worn out and ready for replacement.

My question is, if a tip is heralded as being superior due to its 11 or 13 layers & you have shaved it down to 1/4 of its original size does that mean you are now losing the layered benefit & are playing with a 3 or 4 layer tip?

Or, is the layering only a benefit to hardness consistency and mushroom prevention and the number of remaining layers have no impact on tip performance?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

All things the same, a tip with 13 layers will have thinner layers than a tip with 11 layers. That factors into the playability of that specific tip.

People shave them down because it can give a crisper hit due to the impact point being closer to the ferrule. The taller tip can muffle, for lack of a better term, the feel.
