league: forfeit or re-match

Yesterday my opponent didn't show-up for our scheduled league match. Under the rules we agreed, anything less than 24 hours notification I can take a forfeit.

Forfeits count as automatic wins, and help move me up in rankings. The top half of each division goes on at the end of the season to playoffs.

Would you take the forfeit, and improve your league ranking, or risk with a re-match?

They didn't show - they lose. Why should you have to show up again.

Too many variables for a simple answer. Example a): opponent is a known d**khead who will use the rules to try to screw someone whenever he can. Take the forfeit. Example b): opponent has a pretty good reason he couldn't notify you in time, apologizes, and asks for a rescheduled match at a specific date/time. Give him the match.

You get the idea--circumstances make a huge difference in how you decide this.

I'm in the "too many variables" camp.

Early in the session, and the other team is good about it, asking nicely, more than likely I'll set up a make-up.

Last minute, not so much.

Extenuating circumstances can affect things wildly. Family emergencies, snow storms, last minute work disasters.... I'm not unfeeling. As I said, it really depends on how I'm approached about it.

Late in the session, our LO doesn't allow make-ups, which makes it simpler.

I have 14 opponents, and 1 bye (no count). As of this week, I ranked 1st in my bracket. For playoffs, top half plus wildcard. 1st plays wc, 2nd and 3rd play each other and the winners slug at each other to get out of the division (money round). All make-up matches have to be done before the league director draws up the playoffs.

If it helps, I have two opponents that didn't show up. D+, and B+

If you and your opponent know the rules, I don't see what the problem is.

Unless you want to be a "nice guy"...........If that be the case, why even come here and ask anybody else......for that matter, even if you think the opposite,
(nice guys finish last) then why the poll?

If the team gives you plenty of notice then reschedule. If they don't give plenty of notice but have a good reason for not making the match reschedule. If it is short notice and it sounds like you are going to have difficulty re-scheduling take the forfeit.

Was it you I was discussing this with on Saturday with Tony? If my opponent doesn't show, makes no attempt to contact anyone at all, and is unresponsive to calls/messages, I take the forfeit. I try to be accommodating as possible, I've even given people the entire night to show up without saying a word to the league operator. But when there's no other option, take the forfeit. As long as some type of communication is attempted in a timely manner, I'll do my best to work it out with my opponent. It's a courtesy thing, and it goes both ways.

I would have to know and respect the guy to not take a forfeit. If I knew he was a stand-up dude and this was out of the ordinary, he'd get the match. If he had a history of this kind of stuff, he can shove it.

Bottom line is that you rescheduled and he did not show.

If you give this person leeway again they will probably not respect the rules in the future.

Thus for their own good, you should take the forfeit and show him the rules are the rules and they are expected to abide by them.

If I don't play him, I'm losing an opportunity to play a competitive match.

I don't know about some of you, but that's the reason I play leagues and tournaments. Experience and fun in competition. I'll get neither from not playing. So it's an easy call.

This has happened to me many times in this same exact league.

One opponent got into a car accident. Friendly regular league player for many years. I rescheduled for him.

Another opponent had no explanation and I did not know him at all. I took the forfeit.

Late in the season ? So many people get forfeit wins late in the season because of drop outs and too many make up matches. Late in the season, I usually will take the forfeit no matter what.

I play because i heard there is a lot of money in pool.

For any reason if I couldn't show up, or need to re-schedule I have always notified my opponents if I was not going to show up. If I didn't offer common courtesy, then I expect him to take the forfeit.

FWIW, for the remainder of this season I reached out to my opponent to see if they can re-schedule so I can clear my Sundays. So far, I've completed 3 matches early, and have 1-2 tentatively re-scheduled.

I don't think we met in person yet. I was at Steinway for the 8-ball championship, unfortunately I was two and out.

I agree about re-scheduling too late in the season. I saw the stronger opponent last Sunday, after someone pointed him out he's back. He apologized for not answering my text follow-up for a re-match, and promised to follow up to play with me this past Wednesday. That re-match didn't happen and he hasn't contacted me since. If he doesn't feel motivated enough to reach out to me for a re-match, then I'm going to take the forfeit.

As for the opponent who stood me up last Sunday, his excuse was he had to take his mother to the hospital. Instead of taking the forfeit, I reached out to him and I gave him a chance to make it up this coming Sunday. If he cancels without notice again, then I will insist on a forfeit.

Hmmm

I run a few leagues and to be honest, it depends for me personally. There are times where there is an excuse (car accident, medical emergency, etc)... other than those types of things, no notice = forfeit.
