League format

My league does a play one game then wait for the rotation of team to play their single game then play a second game for a total of 5 games.

It kills me that I can never feel comfortable and get in stroke (playing one game then waiting 20 minutes or so).

For those who play in leagues like this does it effect you badly like me or am I missing something here?

no, don't think you're missing anything,
you got one shot,
when playing strong players.

I suspect most people are affected by this. One consolation is you are always playing an opponent suffering from the same problem ;-)

This is the price, I think, for team drama in the league, where the whole team is there noting you have to win this game or win this game a certain way to win the round.

The alternative is your teammates are playing all 5 games at once and you are waiting an hour and a half... Waiting at the bar? Catching up on AZBilliards? It is just different from a TEAM point of view.

Most people need time to adjust to the round-robin one-game format and it is certainly not everyone's cup of tea. I think the format is more team oriented. Instead of players showing up and leaving right after they play, everyone needs to stay to finish the race. The format also emphasizes how important the break really is and provides some experience in playing hill-hill matches.

This format beats the "other" formats used by some leagues where you play your entire match against only one person. And then you're done. The entire team has to wait, and sometimes you sit there for 3 or more hours before it's your turn.

No thanks, I'd rather be shooting every 10 or 15 minutes, for a few hours, and be done and go home. Not sitting in a chair watching others shoot waiting hours to actually get to play.

Same format we play in my league. In my view it's similar to entering a tourney. Yes, in a tourney you may play several games in a row when you play your first opponent, but then you may sit for 4-6 hours waiting for your next match. It's the main reason I don't enter in any tourneys. Not enough playing and way too much waiting, especially if it's an unorganized mess.

That is why I struggle every year when deciding to get into league or not.

The first year I played it drove me nuts. I find what helps is watching the other matches with real interest. What did the person do wrong or right, how would I have played it etc. If I do this it makes me want to play more and I visualise shots much more, which actually helps me play better.

I try to get to the place of play early enough that I can play a few games before the league games start to get into stroke then and get a good feel for the table.
