League Idea

I have an idea for a league that would help players that are at a higher calibre than most league players, also players that live a far distance from a large city. My idea is to have a division in a larger city with an established charter that would be open to any level player. Have the division play 4 or 5 matches on a saturday once a month. Each match would count as one week of league. This would give players that live a good distance away from cities with good leagues the chance to play VNEA or BCA nationals with competitive teams.

It would also help the master and intermediate divisions get more teams involved in the national events. It may get the BCA master division going again (which I miss personally).

For example, I live in central alberta canada. There could be a league in maybe red deer or calgary that would have participants that can put together competitive masters teams. This would also give players from northern alberta, maybe saskatchewan oppurtunities to get their league time in if their not available to play every week with long drive.

Just an idea that I thought could make some traction with VNEA and BCA. Are there any areas in the US that this would help players in semi-remote locations?

P.S. obviously the division would need to be played in a pool hall with a sufficient amount of tables.

I like this idea, you can take one 2 hr round drip drive to a pool hall, play for 8 hrs and done, instead of four 2 hr drives every week. Of course you'll need to find a bunch of people in the same predicament in the area for this to work. This would also keep the often slow Sat or Sun day times busier at the pool hall.

That idea has been in action for about 20 years in South Dakota. The location was Pierre, right in the center, and players from all across the state and a few over the border came to play once a month. I believe it is still going somewhere.

I knew that this must have been thought up before. I figured it would work for a lot of people too. Especially players with a very busy family schedule, who dont have the time to play every week.

I've been thinking about an "accelerated" apa masters division or bca league, but I'm not sure if it would work. The masters division may, because there are no handicaps. The bca league around here wants scores and such, which would be a pain after each match if doing a handful in a day.

The flip sides are that you fill up a place for a saturday or sunday, but you only do so for maybe once a month.

I'd be happy going for a full day and having a few weeks off, instead of trying to juggle league and life every week. Looking forward to a summer that includes only 1-2 hours of league a week. Sticking to my guns so far on not joining anything else.

Hmmm, it may be hard getting the others to show up on consistently on weekends.

However, this might work. I used to be in a league where the number of matches you played was up to you.

You had to turn up on any Tuesday and the league operator would match you up with an available opponent. You didn't have to show up every week and you could play multiple matches when you showed up if you wanted to. You just had to pay separately for each match you paid.

At the end of the session, the top x players in terms of wins would qualify for the playoffs.

I've been kicking around a similar sort of idea for Masters around here.

We don't have enough higher level players in our division to set up a Masters league, and I don't believe we could support a third night every week.

I thought it would be cool to make it a travelling league, to different divisions, and do it once a month. We have two other divisions less than an hours drive away, it wouldn't be crazy...

Maybe it'll work.. I hope to talk to the LO about it at some point
