league question

call it a spade,

"Wow, how I got sucked into this type of forum hurts my personal sense of pride, but, so be it i guess, I'm a pool nerd at heart."

Nobody said you have to be here.

Sorry to sound aggressive or offensive, but a great number of top flight players/contributors put a lot of time and effort to help out newer players like myself, and I consider this MB a great resource to socialize, network, and share information together.

So don't be surpirsed when someone jumps to defend this MB like myself, like an AZ boucer at the front door giving you the velvet rope burn as you try to enter the door!

The thread is about the Amsterdam Billiards' 9-ball league. That reply is about the APA.

Some of our more note-worthy members in the past few years include Tony Robles, Ginky, Mika Immonen, Steve Lipsky, Jennifer Barretta, Kim Shaw... Honestly, I can go on all day.

Never heard of 'em.

 Just kidding. It would be friggin' awsome if some of those guys showed up to play in our local 9 ball tournament on Mondays.

Where is it and what day? You never know, it could be worth our while.

I generally try not to post on forums, I try to act too cool or important to read posted threads like this. Truth be told, I'm not too cool or important, I'm just in denial that I'm not a rock star with more important things to do or people to see. Sorry to offend you, just trying to salvage any dignity I may have. Can't I just relinquish that we're all losers here? just kidding. be well bouncer Greg.

Gregg, I don't think he was attacking the messageboard or its people. He's simply lamenting the situation which brought him here - i.e. the handicap issues in his league.

Minor observation.

Without knowing all the particulars in this situation, generally, "sandbagging" is always difficult to prove and often the word gets thrown out there prematurely and causes more problems than it solves.

Using the term "underated" is usually far more useful in actually effecting change.

IMO sandbaggers should be tossed out and underated players simply need to have their handicaps adjusted. It shouldn't be a bigger deal than it needs to be.
Great distinction Da Poet!!!

The pool world would be a much better and friendlier place, if we all applied that distinction...

Sandbaggers are cheaters and deserve to be tossed out. They are of weak moral fiber... :(
Equally unfortunate, are the sore losers, who jump to conclusions that their opponent must be cheating/sandbagging... And they attempt to disguise their lack of evidence, by trying to be emphatic or hotheaded, even if they're wrong.
NOTE: Speaking more generally... This in no way casts judgement on any posters in this thread.

Underrated players happen alot in pool (in a significant number of cases it's actually natural). As we all know, most pool players have bad days and good days. But, the most significant reason for players being underrated is.... most of us play the game and strive to improve. With improvement then you will always play better than your rating... hence underrated...

So, if playing in a handicap league system (whether it be 2-7 or D- to A++, ...) it's crucial that the system be able to adjust promptly to the player's best/current level of play.

As evidenced from this thread, pool is one of, if not THE, hardest games to handicap fairly. There are so many varibles. Someone can play like a dog one session and literally play a ball or two better a few days later, then slip back again. I doubt that there exists a truly fair system today. I've seen and participated in some different systems and it is just TOUGH!
Good luck and I hope your situation can be resolved to everybody's satisfaction.

I sincerely appreciate yours and everybody else's responses to this thread. Looking back now, I can see how the perception of our team materialized- but I, and each of our teammates know in our hearts how we play so there's nothing left to do than to move on. I know that our captain will (or has already) talk/ed it over with our league director to see what needs te be addressed and resolved. Thanks again all for the insight. I'm truly amazed (and rather impressed) at how closely knit the pool community is (albeit on an online forum). :)
