As a flight instructor for many years I was always confronted by new students who had deathgrips on the controls. Naturally in flying as in pool, one can't smoothly control the subtle movements and feelings required for accuracy. My method of teachng was to interlace a pencil over and under the fingers. Simple, cheap, and it works. The thumb stays free and a fingertip or two can softly hold the cue. The hand can't be closed firmly.
