Legal requirements for league?

I was wondering what kind of legal needs a league system/format/idea may require. For example, if a new system was created, how would one go about protecting that? I plan on trying something out, but want to protect it from potential poaching for unregulated use elsewhere if it turns out as hoped.

There are a few lawyers around, so I was hoping they may give a little insight, being also a bit knowledgeable on the pool scene.

Just realize that even if you copyright it, as long as the product is changed by some small percentage ( I do not have the actual percentage but thought it was around 20%) then it would not be copyright infringement. So it is not always worth going through the copyright process.

The format and method of operation are not like current pool leagues, as far as I'm aware. Those two things are what I'd most be interested in protecting.

I'm no expert but I think you'd need a patent. But whatever you do (legally), your protection is merely the right to take it to court...and spend whatever it takes to win your case. Tech companies are all over this...and it's mostly about who has the best/most legal resources...and cases sometimes take years so it end ups being largely a case of attrition more than anything else.

Personally, I probably wouldn't bother. This is pool after all and ROI is seldom favorable.

Okay. I've got some other business plans that I need a lawyer for, so I could just toss this one on that stack. Wish a friend of mine had gone into business law instead of family law!

Thanks to you guys for your suggestions.

I've also asked CSI if they have somebody they could refer me to, since I'd like it to ultimately be BCA sanctionable.
