On Law & Order last night, Lenny Briscoe (played by Jerry Orbach) was invovled in an undercover sting operation and was shooting pool with the subject. After calling and making a triple cross side bank shot the subject asked him where he'd learned to shoot like that. Briscoe replied that he'd learned from "Jersey Red", "Captain Hook" and "100 Ball Blackie". Who is "100 Ball Blackie" ?
Does he mean "N.Y. Blackie" ?

No clue who that is, but this has to be the first time pool was on a sitcom and someone didn't get hustled. There was an episode years ago where lenny played a guy for $10 i think and ran the table, but it was obvious to me that they set up every shot for him str8 in, he had to hit the rail first to make the 8 ball if i recall, made me wonder if the guy could really play, it was hard to tell. Time and time again if theres a pool game someone gets hustled, there was some stupid tv show on the other night, a rerun of some old show i never even heard of, an this kid got hustled by some girl, really pathetic. These shows make people think that every time they play pool there has to be some sort of wager, really pathetic. A small town i play pool at on occasion, the owners of the bar have to pay an annual tax on their pool table because it's considered a source of gambling revenue.

Detective Dick responding. That shot is taught in the book WINNING ONE POCKET and INSIDE english is used.

any chance you could diagram the shot? i didn't catch it on tv...

Mine's packed away because of my upcoming move to Georgia. My recommendation is that you get the book asap. Do yourself a favor.

I'm thinking that since Jerry Orbach is from N.Y. and I 'think' he's affiliated with Amsterdam Billiards, that he's referring to "New York Blackie" (Al Bonifay (sp). Can anyone confirm or have information to the contrary ? I also 'think' that N.Y. Blackie is currently living in the Tampa area (yes, no, maybe so)..... Doug

Jerry Orbach is a really good pool player. Back in the 70's he played Minnesota Fats on a TV talk show and beat him. I don't remember all of the details but its on the special features of "The Hustler" DVD.

a perfect gentleman

In 1976 I went to NY to visit a friend who was doing a show on Broadway. He had rented the top floor on Jerry Orbach's townhouse. Jerry got us tickets to the play he was doing-"CHICAGO". He was the best thing in it. Later he took us out to dinner. He is one of the finest guys in the business I have ever met. A real genuine stand up guy. Although he was a big star on the stage he told me he never felt comfortable in films. Finally he found his niche in Law and Order as Lenny Briscoe. He is great in it. He had a table in his house I think it was a Brunswick which he played on only occasionaly. He loves the game. I am sorry as I was just a kid and still awed by him and didnt ask him too many questions about his pool history.

I just corrected my first posting in this thread. I believe that it's inside english used to accomplish his now-famous 3 cushion shot.

So the triple cross side bank shot is in Winning one pocket? Sounds to me that it would not be a great shot to use in one pocket, but what do I know? Smorg plays more one pocket than I do. I wonder how often he tries it.

Could this be the triple cross side bank shot that is one of the 40 shots in the artistic pool competition? If so it can be seen on page 40 of their shot challenge/program:

Perhaps one of the one pocket players could expound on when you might use the shot in one pocket? I suppose you could move the balls down to the foot rail and try it there, but then it wouldn't be a cross side shot, would it?

Ive seen Gary Spaeth use it when the kiss is on going just one rail. This is when the cue ball would get in the way of the object ball on a cross corner bank. It is one sexy shot.
