Lights in Pool Room

A few guys are setting up a new pool room. The room is well lit from overhead flourescent lights. Since there is enough light, they are thinking about keeping the room lit all of the time and not using table lights. There will be approx 18 tables in this place.

Does anyone have any thoughts/comments/feelings on pool rooms being fully lit up? The ones I have been in have been relatively dark and table lights were used.

I tried that in my new room after I moved and it did look more open without the lights, but after installing the lights like before the tables are much brighter and with the new tournament blue simonis cloth they look great too !!

But thats just me.

I totally agree with this post.

My idea of a Pool Table Light is this. The Pool table Light should light up the table well, for comfortable play, but not compete with the ambient lighting that is there for atmosphere.

I like a poolroom with overhead lights, but they should probably spend some time working on the colors and decor of the room to be sure that it doesn't feel like a Walmart. Good luck to your friends with their new poolroom.

Many people have been fooled by the amount of light that appears to be enough given off by ceiling lights. Advise your friends that the best light for pool is individual table lights. An extra expense...but worth every penny in the long run.

I agree with this post. There is really no substitute for table lights. The light they provide is indeed superior to ceiling lights, and they are invaluable in terms of the decor of a well-appointed pool room. My recommendation would be to install both ceiling and table lights, and put the ceiling lights on two separate switches (if you have four rows of ceiling lights, for example, put 1&3 on one switch and 2&4 on the other). This allows you the maximum flexibility in terms of how much ambient light you want to provide around the playing area depending on the changes in your market and the occasion.

not a pool room unless you have lights over tabels, that is all i have to say!!!!!!

I agree with most of the views on here, that individual table lights are better, than just relying on ceiling lights

I will say though, that if the guys opening the room are going to go with the recommendations suggested on here, they would be best getting tournament standard overhead lights, that hold 4x tube lights, as they give a good bright and even light coverage over the table, but are not too bright that they would be hard on the eyes , they will definitely be more expensive, but will most definitely be worth while in the long run as previously mentioned

If I remember right, a little birdy told me they're getting 8 diamond 9-footers and a bunch of bar boxes. I'd encourage them to dig a little deeper and get the diamond lights.

I was in a hall that used the table lights as the rental timer. The lights went on, a computer recorded the time and the table number. Lights off when the balls went back to the counter. I thought it was a good set-up, fair for the customer.
