Limited Edition Cues

Hey everyone!

It was suggested that Crown Cues build a limited edition cue and sell them to help raise the funds for rebuilding the workshop that the tornado destroyed in December. Gene really liked the idea and asked me to get some opinions from everyone. So, I'm trying to find out what kind of woods and designs you all like. We'd appreciate your feedback. His goal is to have them finished by December 8th, 2009, exactly one year after the tornado hit. Some will be auctioned on eBay and there is a chance one or two will be raffled off at the Super Billiards Expo. Of course, the design will be determined before these things take place. But, the owners of the limited edition cues will be known before they are ever completed.

So, please choose the woods you think should be used for these cues. They will be named the Royal Twister Cues and will come with paperwork which identifies them as being a part of a limited set.
 
Any suggestions would be gladly considered, also. So speak up! Gene is hoping to see all sorts of feedback, when he gets home from work, later, tonight.
 
Cocobolo here...it's the wood used on my old J-2 Jacoby, and I still think it's a good looking cue, even with zero inlay work and only single rings of metal.

Let us know when the auctioning starts, okay? I don't surf ebay...

(edit) Thinking about it, I'd probably be more interested in just buying one of these cues over bidding on ebay.
 
Cocobolo forearm with deeply figured curly maple points. I've seen one DP cue like that which I really liked other than the inlays he used.

Another type of wood combo I love is an ebony forearm with fiery amboyna burl points.
 
Where's Pink Ivory,Ambonya,or snakewood

You said you wanted LE Cues. To me that means Unique. No choice for Ambonya,no choice for snakewood. High quality Cues need High quality woods. Limited Addition(500) cues? I would use 2 styles 4pts,and plain Jane with Rings. Complete with Balabuska style butts,with the brown bumpers. Maybe a deal could be struck with Davis for special 4 pt fronts. I would copy Preds. idea ( uni lock with serial numbers in the gold Pin.) Stroud uses gold plated Radial Pins. I would not sacrifice playability in any way. I would ask Mr. Varney, Mr Sly, Gina, prewitt, Troy downy, Ryan( Rat cues),what makes there cues have superior playability. and use the input, mark

Good ideas all. If points, make them sharp points, please...no cnc stuff.
If we keep this up though, it could be a thread of us making our dream cues...;)
 
I've been thinking about a limited edition of 10 player cues and 5 masse' cues. I'm only one cuemaker and it's all I can do to build 35 to 50 cues per year. I do all the construction myself. It would take me about 10 years to make 500 cues. I want them to be high quality cues using very popular woods. The idea of putting specialty woods in the design is a good one, also.

One special thing about these cues is my wife is going to help with some of the artwork. It will be the first time she has actually taken part in the creation of my cues.

I do appreciate the input. I would like to hear from others also.
 
I"m pretty sure someone asked earlier why I didn't mention some of the more unusual woods, like Pink Ivory, Amboyna, etc.. I was trying to list more common woods that might appeal more to the masses for the basic cue parts. Also, the poll feature only allows 10 items.

They won't be plain Jane cues, for sure. And as far as playability, that's one of the biggest compliments he's had on his cues, so far, so that's not a problem. The whole idea is to design and build a cue that each owner will be proud to have in his or her collection AND that will be highly appreciated as a playing cue, in case anyone decides to use it as such.

We will make sure the cue auctions are mentioned on the forum, when they are listed on eBay. I think he's waiting to get the design ideas firmed up, before he lists the

Previous suggestions are good for specialty woods in them, I would forget the masse' cues (not much demand for them) and make a matching
Break/Jump cue to go with the player's cues.

Some of Crown Cues' best business is masse' cues, but there are less who will actually buy a masse' cue just to collect it. They are usually bought for some real serious use. They aren't going to pay for the pretty, collectible cue. They just want it to perform. That's why he's only doing 5 masse' cues.

The break/jump is a pretty nice idea, too. I doubt it will be do-able, according to his time limits, but I'm glad you suggested it, in case he wants to try.

(You seriously did not know that Crown Cues specializes in masse' cues?? He can't leave out the guys who keep him going!)

So, although there aren't a lot of folks voting, yet, the most chosen woods are Cocobolo, Ebony and Burls, with Maple right behind. I bet some really nice cues could be built with Cocobolo being the main wood, Ebony handle and rings, and some Burl rings, points and inlays. Maybe he could do some Ebony inlays inside some of the Burl inlays, too. I think that'd be real nice looking.

What kind of Burls do you guys like best?

I just saw a Diveney with some type of nasty (as in cool) figured teak.....

never seen it used in a cue before, but it was unusual (as in everyone would ask what wood it is) and stunning at the same time. I shoulda asked him more about it, but there was a good sized crowd gathered around the few cues he brought with him.
