The roughness that you feel are the ends of the strands that compose the linen thread. And these happens when the wrap gets worn out and the strand breaks thus exposing the ends that you feel. You can have a cuemaker shave these off and repress your wrap. Or as a quick fix with no guarantee on how long they'll stay down is to burnish it (the wrap area) with wax paper.

Every cue that I ever had that had a irish linen wrap became this way. Some cues with a linen wrap last longer than others but sooner or later the linen will get ruff.Thats why I like a leather wrap.

What I did was an experiment, because there are hardly any cuemakers here in Finland.

I took the smoothest sand paper I could find, actually one of the Q smooth papers and "sanded" the wrap area a little bit to get rid of the "loose" threads.
Then I took a piece of hard plactic and meticulously went around the wrap and pressed the linen so that surface became shiny. This was done manually, because I don't have a lathe and it took a while. But, now the wrap is much smoother than in the first place. Now, the few rough areas remaining in the wrap are actually tiny little holes and the sanding didn't help much... only a rewrap would take care of it. Oh, and the cue is 9 year old Falcon J-B.

If you start processing the wrap on your own, there is always a risk of it unraveling, but might want to try that method.

Tot ziens :)
