Liquor = Success???

The pool room that opened up here lasted almost 6 months. The owner couldn't get a liquor license and refused to allow smoking. Getting a beer and wine license is nearly impossible too and I know this because a friend of mine wanted to buy the place if he could get one, but to no avail. The state is going to lottery 3 licenses off next year, from what I understand, and if you're not one of the lucky winners, you're screwed. The only way to get one is to buy one from someone who has one already, but not using it. There are none available in this county and you can't use one from another county. Even those from another county are going for $25k, again, not my research, my friends. So, the pool room is done, but I've seen a few people outside the place working in the past few weeks but I'm not sure what's going on. They've taken down some of the signs in the windows but not the sign on the building. Rent was only $1,200 a month so I'm surprised the guy didn't give it more of a chance and make some changes. It had 12 tables, 8 footers, with room for maybe 4 or 5 more. Plenty of space between tables too, which was real nice. No food+no alcohol+no smoking=NO CHANCE. I wish it would have worked out, the owners were really nice people and had a business background, they owned a bait and tackle shop in California for 25 or 30 years prior. I guess it wasn't meant to be though, 6 months is hardly an attempt, IMO. Peace, John.

Wow... I would be all in for rent that is less than 2k! The places I have seen around here in FL want 10k+ per month!

That is exactly why I always tell guys to be sure you are zoned and can put a license in. Even if you don't want it you have to have the option available, you never know you may change your mind. It is also much more sellable with a license or license option. It is just foolish to do it any other way regardless of ones personal feelings about drinking.

You say you don't allow drinking, is that by choice or you are not permitted to?
In Florida in most places there are no age restrictions regardless of whether you serve beer or not. It is the same license that they have in restaurants where you can have a drink while having dinner with your family. Most better restaurants serve beer and have a wine list but they don't tell you the kids have to stay out in the car it is perfectly fine for them to be there. There is no distinction, although the owner can impose their own rules as to age requirements if they wish. Some places like bars don't want minors there since there is no reason for them to be there, they can't drink. A pool room though has other things going on besides the drinking and teens have a reason to be there.

In Penna, We can let them bring it in but we can`t sell or serve it to them.
Plus for being a bartender yrs ago, its sometimes not good for a family type pool room.
