Listening to IPOD whilst playing???

Just wondering what people think about the growing the number of players I see wearing Ipods at tournements?....

Should it be allowed?

Does it help keep you focused?

If so what music do you listen to?

A friend mine who does this claims that it calms his nerves and whilst he doesnt play it too loud it also helps him set a steady pace??
Sorry im a traditionalist. I don't mind others using it, i just find it... well, a disrespect... or maybe i just don't get it. And yeah, im going to get slack for saying it's a disrespect... but enlighten me... cuz seriously, i don't get it and for those who do.... clue me in. Maybe there's somethig im missing. :thumbsup.

it drives your opponent nutz, which is so bizarre because only you can hear it. imo, it reflects on the lack of focus of the opponent that it would bother them,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,etiquette or not. it's like, some players don't like playing others who wear caps.
that was the word i was looking for.... etiquette, not disrespect. My apologies.

Look at it this way......

Would you incourage an opponent to talk to you while you're playing? Talking while someone is playing is disrespectfull. friendly play aside, you're not there to talk to your opponent so why would you object to him listening to music?

Just because something hasn't been availble for use in the past doesn't make not using said item a tradition.

I used to not like my opponents using an ipod, but I was able to test this out in a tournament this Summer and I didn't think it was that much of a "help" like I thought it was gonna be. So, now it doesn't bother me if my opponent is wearing one or not. Let's face it, poker players use it. And, although I don't smoke, I hear smoking calms nerves during a match yet some people do it, others don't.

As long as they can hear, "roll out" or "you suck" from me during the match, then I am fine with them listening to their ipod. ;)

Personally, I like practicing with my IPOD. Its soothing and relaxing for me, but helps me focus on playing while blocking out all the "chatter" in the pool room. I don't personally play tournament with mine due to an issue at a tournament when I didn't hear my opponent ask for someone to watch a hit. It wasn't an intentional thing, just a soft spoken opponent and me not realizing the volume was up too much to hear her. I really felt bad about it at the time.

I don't mind if someone else wears them when we play, but am the first to get a bit bent out of shape if they insist on singing along - Out Loud and Off Key - with their music. Enjoy your own music, but if you can't carry a tune - don't insist on sharing your tone-deaf musical talents with me while we play.

i personally dont care if they have seashells taped to the side of there head so they can hear the ocean... it doesnt affect my game one way or the other.

I like to wear homemade antennaes on each side of my head that are about eight inches in length high. Put these with the big radio that is duct taped on my chest and there you have it. Same sound, much cheaper. All of this and my APA break and run jacket, flourescent yellow case, and I am off looking for action! Forgot to mention my Dominoes shirt under all the duct tape.

I have on occasion used an ipod while practicing. It helps drown out the lousy music selection of the kids at the local pool hall.

So far I've never tried to use one during a tournament match, but I definitely wouldn't have a problem with someone who did.

I've never understood the mentality of "if I don't like it, even if it's not hurting me or anyone else, it shouldn't be allowed."

So by that logic if I find the color orange ugly bright and distracting then you shouldn't be able to wear anything orange?!

there you go. that is exactly why i will put on a player on occasion. the music they play in rooms nowdays is geared solely to the weekend yuppie player.
