there are different ways to chalk up. the snooker way, to brush across once or twice. the oliver ortmann method of almost boring a hole in the cube, from the extreme speed/heat/friction. the tony drago way, only chalk once across right before the 6-ball. and the shush shush rythmic method, that bustamante and myself prefer. why bring this up? i noticed, that chalking up in a certain way, helps my game. after i got my new capone shaft, my cue making friend, said, ok, now, here's how you keep your shaft clean, tilt the cue, brush away, a few times, let the residue of chalk particles fall on the floor and away from the shaft. in other words, chalk up like karen corr, but with the cue tilted, so the residue falls away. well, i tried this method, for a month or so. my shaft stayed clean as a whistle, but my game suffered! why? i figured out, my rythme was off, way off! i said screw it, and went back to the regular way of chalking up, and my game came back, and i just make sure i use more paper towels on my shaft more often. problem solved. i also noticed, it seems that most of the time, not all of the time but most of the time, the person who gets up early in a race, is usually the person who wins the race. for instance, if the score is 5-3 in a race to 7, usually the person who has 5, will be the eventual winner. another observation, people play differntly depending on the enviroment. with no one watching, people play sloppy. with just a few people watching people play well. with a lot of people watching, people make mistakes, but the better players will straighten out fast, and play the to the table, not to the crowd. another thing i noticed, when your opponent gets up to the table to make the final money ball, and he hears people say, oh, this is an easy shot, what happens is he will usually miss, however, if he hears people say, this shot is real difficult, he will probaly make it, what will happen is he will hear this, and "rise" to the occassion, just to rub it in your face. furthermore, i noticed it is much better to walk around the table after each rack and collect the balls from drop pockets, than it is to, collect the balls from one place, and every once in a while have to bend ALL THE WAY DOWN and go under the table, to search for that one missing ball. and finally, for now, i noticed, between steve tipton, and mitch laurence, they both have very easy jobs, but i guess mitch has it easier, because, he gets to sit down. good night from new york.
