Live threading bits.

Well I’m going along on my journey of learning the cnc. I’d like to try some live threading. What bits are you guys using. There are so many choices, I just feel confused. I know I want to be able to do 10 tpi and it needs to be 60 degrees.

Thanks to everyone who helped me with the mini end mills needed for inlays and a good inexpensive source.

Thanks

Almost all the big cue machinery/supply retailers it seems sell these, Hightower, Atlas, Unique I believe. A good search term is “thread mill”.

The challenge for me, at least on my CNC, is the G-Code for continuous rotation of the A-axis while the Y is moving. My Mach-3 won't apparently do that.

Ahh.. understood. I would need a fixture to hold work at 90 degrees to accomplish this but can see how this would work. If so, an A-axis would not even be required.. External threads could be accomplished the same way I assume but if you are working at the end of a 29" shaft, I'm not sure I'm smart enough to figure that one out.

okay, I'll admit my ignorance. Please educate me. How can you live thread something externally if it is not rotating??

I didn't say it didn't rotate. I said it didn't need to be continuous. With an A axis, a 60 degree V bit and a few Lines of Gcode, you can cut real nice external threads.
I created an Excel spreadsheet that writes the gcode for me. Enter:
Thread length
Thread pitch,
Depth of cut

The shaft tenons were externally threaded with a V bit.
