Lizard wrap

I was just wondering what type of lizard do lizard wraps come from and what part of the lizard? Ive seen some cues with genuine lizard wraps and its seems to me like that would have to be a pretty big lizard for it to be one piece. Is there any difference in the feel of genuine and lizard print, ive never held a lizard but I would assume it would be a bit more course. Thanks

I think that mostly Water Monitors (Varanus salvatore ssp) or Nile Monitors (Varanus niloticus) are used for skins for these wraps. These are a couple of the Monitor Lizards that are not listed in CITES as either Threatened or Endangered (ESA Appendix I and II). Anything that is CITES listed is restricted for international trade.

Both commonly reach lengths of over 5 feet.

...and they bite really hard. I had a pet water monitor that got mad at me and clamped down on my forearm (not cue). It didn't let go for 45 minutes. I had to sit and watch tv with that sucker locked on my arm till it let go because I didn't want to hurt it. They have a whole mouth full of teeth, let me tell you. Sorry, I just had to throw that story in there since it came up :)

Oh, yeah...they can definitely chomp down pretty hard. If you get a 6 footer or better latched on to you, he can do some serious damage. There is also the distinct possibility of very serious bacterial infections. One species of Monitor Lizard, the Komodo Monitor or Komodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis) actually kills larger prey in this manner. It is not a venomous lizard (the Gila Monster and Beaded Lizard are the only venomous lizards), but it's bite is fatal because of the bacteria in it's saliva. It will bite something like a deer or water buffalo and then follow it sometimes for several days until it dies from the infection. The bite is frequently fatal in humans too because the bacteria are so virulent and the infection progresses so rapidly that antibiotics are ineffective.

Doesn't sound like he really wanted to hurt you. He probably just didn't want you to change the channel.

LOL, Even that or he wanted alittle personal time to hang out together.

I had a friend that had one, and those monitors are pretty wild. A women that owned a pet shop gave it to him, because It was to big, and mean to do anything with. He used welders gloves to handle his.

Yeah, it turns out he wasn't a fan of the Crocodile Hunter.

Thats pretty crazy stuff. I was just looking at some cues online and noticed that some cues had genuine lizard wrap and it made me think about the origin of the leather. It had to be a pretty big lizard but never thought about monitors. How do they go about collecting the skins? I suppose that they could probably only get one or two sheets out of a lizard depending on the size of the thing.

When I get the skins, you can see the form of legs, neck, rear. I believe they are imported from Indonesia somewhere.

Yup, They have been known to have up to 15 different types of deadly bacteria in their mouths and one is is a strain of Anthrax. One bit Sharon Stones husband in the leg at a zoo once I don't know what city it was. It was the same one we hade here at the Salt Lake Zoo for a while. When did this become a herpetological forum? :)

Oow oow I want a lizard rear wrap that would make a joke at the pool hall lol what kind of wrap is that lol it's lizard ass wrap lmfao. :D

If you're interested, Atlas just got some lizard and elephant tail wraps in. They gave me a pretty good price b/c it's not in their catalog yet. They have 4 colors of monitor lizard, b/w ring tail lizard, and the elephant in 2 colors I believe.

Hey cuemakers... how many wraps do you get out of a whole monitor lizard skin? I know they can be in excess of 5', but how much area is useable?

And while we're at it, what is a ringtail lizard? I can't ever wade through the Google Search of boots, wallets and wraps to ever find a photo of a whole one on the internet.
