Hey there,

I'm looking to find a few things for my new(old) atlas lathe

it's a 101 w/ quick change and 36" centers. I will need to get LOTS of stuff before I use it to build a cue, which is my longterm goal. anyway, in the mean time I'd like to do tip/ferrule and shaft work. I've found a resource for arbor's, taps, and the like, but I can't find any plastic or Teflon collets. I know they exist because I've seen them, but who sells them? I'd also like a steady rest that will fit it. the model number is 101.074 and 101.20140 for the gear box

any info is much appreciated!

BTW if anyone knows a good place for atlas/craftsman parts for lathes, I'd sure like to know

why not make your own?

You have a metal lathe, why not get acquainted with it by making the collets? Just buy some teflon or delrin rod locally then cut both the od and ID without moving the part in the lathe chuck so you have concentric collets. First settle on a size to make the OD's I think a lot of us use between 3/4 and 5/8 inch for the shaft collets and 35 mm for the od of the butt collets if you intend to use a center rest and a large bearing with a 35 mm center hole. You can buy your raw plastics from any industrial hardware supplier.
The shaft collets are very easy since they have no internal taper in them for most pro taper cue shafts. And the butt collets can have an id taper by using maybe 1/2 degree setting on the compound slide.

That's what I do, and your right, I just leave enough hanging out of the jaws to cut both the ID, and OD at the same time.Always comes out concentric that way. That method will come in handy for many other things too.;)

I think Chris hightower sells them though. A while back I saw on one of the tooling places sites, (a place simular to MSC or maybe It was them), that they had some composite collets too, but not sure about shaft size collets.

For Atlas Parts

Try AZ'er "itsjustjay". He has a company called Toolhunters. They part out Atlas's sometimes. Very nice guy to talk to, also.
