Looking for a great pool video game for the PC.

What I am looking particulary in a video game is one that will allow me to play a computer opponent at an expert level. It would also be a plus if it has the ability for the computer to play its' self. It would also be cool if it showed the path of the object ball and path of the cueball before the shot is taken. I did a search and came up with nothing (although I do remember reading some threads on this subject).

Any recommendations?
Thanks
Matt

Virtual Pool Hall would be my recommendation. It has all of the features you mentioned with the possible exception of having two computer players play each other. It may actually have that feature as well; I've just never tried it. This version has been replaced by Virtual Pool 3, which I don't like quite as well, so it may be hard to find a copy.

carom 3d.

thousands of players, LOADS of very good players, realistic, free to download and fun

Do you get to play pool in real life often?

Hurm. I just don't see any computer game for pool really measuring up to an 'expert' level of play. Hell, it takes a supercomputer (Deep Blue, from IBM) to match up to a grandmaster chess player. And chess is much more structured than pool is. There are just so many variables involved in any given pool game - a shot can be shot so many ways, at so many degrees, so many types of english and amounts (degrees again), etc.

Interplay's VIRTUAL POOL 3 is a good recommendation for you. In practice game you can toggle cue ball and object ball path, the path will change as you change english and shot speed. Computer opponents are great too with Jeannete Lee as the highest ranking player. This is a good game to practice on how you view object ball while lining up your shot.

This is a good point, and I have not personally seen a pool simulator that does a good job of emulating a professional player. Even VP's computer player, which is the best I've seen, shoots a lot of crazy shots that no human would ever shoot. The VP computer opponents can make it very tough on you, though, just not by way of conventional methods. The VP disclaimer should read something like:

VP will not help you with:
Stroke, stance, grip, or anything "feel" related, nor will it provide opponents that can teach you anything about shot selection or strategy.

VP may help you with:
Aim, rules of play (for certain games), the effects of spin & speed on cb and ob, and, to a small degree, shot selection (this NOT by watching what the computer opponent does, but by learning what is most effective against the computer opponent. While the computer opp. may not play exactly like a human opp., a lot of the strategies that will make you successful against the computer opp. will also work against human opponents.)

All in all, I think it is a good game for someone trying to learn a few basics. At least it provides a consistent playing environment that, for the most part, responds accurately, which is more than I can say for some of the barroom tables I've played on, lol. If you're looking for a sim to help you with your 1-pocket game, though, keep looking.

Right now just a couple hours a week. Here in about a month or two (converting garage over to a rec room) I will set up my Gold Crown and will get to play a couple hours a day....like I use to. It's been broken down for the last 10 years....I am getting anxious.

Do you...or anyone else, feel like a computer could be programmed to play just as well or better than a top professional?

i dont agree that u cant learn strategy, shot selection etc. i know my game went up in these parts and it was purely because i played alot of online poolgames.

I tend to believe that pool video games can't really help you outside of perhaps satiating a craving now and then.

However Around the time I started learning the game I bought World Pool Championship for the PS2. The game provides aiming aides so that you can pot just about any shot on the table. A friend of mine believes that I progressed as fast as I have because I spent hours a day looking at these angles in the pool game, and it was ingrained into my mind. There could be something to it, I dunno.

Sure, it could play better than a pro, but it wouldn't play like a human player. They could simply program the computer player to not miss any makeable shots (whether they are masse's, jumps, 8-rail banks/kicks, etc.), and it will play better than any pro. It would be ridiculous to watch, though.

I didn't say that you can't learn strategy/shot selection from the game, I just said that the game will not provide computer opp's that will teach you strategy/shot selection. You will just have to figure out what works on your own.

Also, my opinion on this topic is based solely on my experience playing 9-ball against the computer players on Virtual Pool, so if you're talking about a different product, then we're comparing apples and oranges.

In Virtual Pool, the computer opponent only employs the most rudimentary of strategies in 9-ball, which are a) if it can't make a ball, it tries to play a safety b) after making a ball, it tries to leave a shot on the next ball. The computer player does not, as far as I can tell, do any of these things a) look 2-3 balls ahead (it doesn't play to be on the correct side of the ball for position on the next ob), b) deal with clusters when it is most convenient, rather than at the last minute, c) try to freeze to obstructing balls when playing safeties, d) play two-way shots. And it certainly doesn't employ any advanced strategies like, for instance, playing a leave on the 2-ball while moving the 2-ball to a spot that will set up an easy 2-9 combo should the opponent fail make a good hit.

As far as shot selection is concerned, the computer player heavily favors masse shots over kicks and jumps, which, even if you are Mike Massey, doesn't make any sense. I've had the game run racks on me where almost every shot was insanely difficult (like shooting a massee to make an ultra-thin cut shot AND have enough left-over spin to make the cb curve into the rail again and go two more rails for position on the next ball, lol). The only thing I learned from that is that the people at InterPlay didn't put much effort into making the opponents seem human-like, which would explain why VP doesn't even offer computer players for 1-pocket or any of the carom games.

If you're familiar with a pocket billiard game that provides a strategically sound computer opponent, especially a one-pocket opponent, then let me know, as this has always been my biggest complaint about VP.

yes, i think we are comparing aples and peers :D

well ive been playing Carom 3d alot. 99% play against real players, not the computer. i havent found a single smart computer player either. alot of these players, especially players who are crown, who have played over 20.000 games online and have a win% of 60+%. i learn alot from these players.

prove is: i havent trained in 2 months. ive been playing video games to keep my pool adiction going. i today just became 5th in the state championship, where i never get true qualifications 9 out of 10 times.

i know for myself i will continue playing online poolgames. i know it helps my game, and anything thats not bad for your game, can only be good :D
