Looking for a cuemaker. [ADDED DESIGN - please discuss!]

Hello all :),

I am looking for a cue and got a few questions, hope you guys can give me some advice.

1st off I'm from London, UK. I used to play snooker seriously but I find that I miss American pool, since it was the game I started off with. Since pool isn't that popular here I am having a hard time to find a place to try different cues out to get a 'feel' for what I like, if I had to guess, I would say I'm after a 'crisp' feel, similar to my maple snooker cue. Since I haven't played for a few years, I'm sure getting used to something new is no problem.

The cue I'm looking for:

1. I would like to use a shaft with a thinner tip, so I am quite sold on the predator 2nd generation Z2 shafts.

2. As to aesthetics I want NONE of the insets, veneers, inlays etc. The only decoration I would maybe want is simple 4 simple points in contrasting wood.

3. As to wood used, I would like to go with a solid wood that performs best. Maple and ebony?

4. The high gloss polished finish bothers me, I would like it to be matte, a 'raw' feeling finish on which a dent or a nick wouldn't look out of place. The shiny polish feels too fragile. Looking at the "cues in progress" photos on many a cue makers web page look much more appealing to me in terms of how the wood looks.

5. I would like to install the grip myself since I work with leather regularly - just need the grip groove cut.

To sum it up:

I am looking for a very solid professional cue for PLAYING. I do not want to spend any money on exotic material or special detail, I am after something simple but of good quality - a cue that will not let me down. I will play at an international level.

My budget is around 700 $ at a stretch (including the shaft).

Again the top qualities I am after are:

Simplicity, quality of materials/construction and performance.

Please advise a cue that would fit these qualities. I am open to both ready made and custom options. Are there any makers out there that still specialize in performance?!

Thanks for reading, hope someone can help :)

Hi Olive,
There's at least a 1/2 doz. or more cue makers that frequent this site, including myself, that could handle your request. I do a lot of Predator shafts so a Z-2 is not a problem. A lot of the builders that I'm referring to may not have read your post yet because believe it or not, we actually do spend time in our shops working, away from the computer.
In lieu of a hi-gloss finish, what did you have in mind? You should know that today's clear-coat finishes have evolved quite nicely. They add a level of protection for the cue that was not there with say, lacquer.
Your pricing for what you have in mind is in the ball-park considering the Z-2 will eat-up $225/$250 of your budget.
If you'd prefer to discuss this in private. please feel free to PM. Cheerio

UK cue

Good morning,
I would be glad to work with you on your project. You are welcome to visit my website (www.triplecrosscues.com). I pride myself on the playability of my cues. Your specs do not sound unreasonable and I believe I can give you a fine product. Yes the cues on my website are all glossy finish but a hand rubbed oil matte finish is not out of the question. I deal mostly with USA customers that are into gloss. I have built some furnishings with tung or boiled linseed oils before and they look superb. Your budget is reasonable for the final product also. Let me know what you think, positive or negative.
Thanks in advance for considering Triple Cross Cues.

Thank you kindly! I guess i got a bit carried away with anticipation, I'm very excited about this. Very interesting options, i am looking to pick a maker and start this by the end of this week, anyone else willing to accommodate me, please do let me know!

Thank you again, Oliver
