Thats about the cheapest you will find one to do what you want to do. Thats a fair price for that machine.

i have a great deal on a hightower mid size. ill send a pm

Dave has the best machine you're going to need. Second would be at minimum a Unique Inc Shop Companion package 3. The one on ebay is not going to work for changing out your joints. It needs at least a steady rest and a collet close to the joint. It appears you're trying to convert house cues. Best bet would be getting a machine designed to do that. Call Chris Hightower or the guys at Unique. Good Luck

thanks jazz

the reason i went with chris' lathe is bc it has a full legnth cutting ability. i have been making full cues on this machine for about 2 years.

i wish i had some direction when i was looking i just got lucky.:D :D

if youre gonna spend the maney buy the right thing. mid size or deluxe from chris. they are the most versatile machines for the cash!!!

other machines are good but in a few months you will find some dont do what you need them to do but hightower lathes can do it all

plus his customer service is excelent. thats most important to me. i just flat out like the guy:D :D

Absolutely man! I'm planning on getting a Deluxe to match my midsize. Totally love the one I've got now, but I'd like to have the Deluxe for certain things. Plus, I don't like doing ALL the work on one machine. It's a pain in the (rhymes with thick) to keep resetting things when I'm moving to another part of the cue making schedule. But full length tapering is the best. And if what's his name (too lazy to scroll down) wants to convert house cues like I think he wants to, it's best to retaper them instead of just adding rings and sleeves.

likewise, i am doint everythng on 1 machine. i try to make 4 cues at the same time to save time. i just do the same step 4 times. then repeat.

Tips & Ferrules

The little set-up you were asking about (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=180156312456&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=008), is not designed nor intended to do any joint work of any kind. It's purpose is to do tips ferrules and shaft cleaning, sanding and can be set-up to do some other basic repairs. If you want to do accurate joint work, or build cues from house sticks, make shafts etc., I recommend you investigate the machines offered by Hightower, Unique Products, or Porper. I like Hightowers' stuff but they all make quality machines.

I've been doing 10 cues at a time till I hired another person. Now it's like 15 cause he's working on house cue conversions for learning the basics. That's why I need to get another machine soon. The mini lathe I have is only for basic repair and some other tedious work.

I may be wrong but the ebay lathe won't change joint collars, or do any drilling for that matter like it is pictured. I don't mind those machines selling because I have sold over $800 worth of parts to go on one machine to make it do what the customer originally thought it would do. The average sell for one of those machines in extra parts is a few hundred.

It is what it says it is.

It's not meant to be nor is it advertised to be anything more than it is.

Hi All,

I am looking for a lathe that is:

- light weight
- handle play cue butt, jump cue butt, shaft.
- change tip
- change ferrule
- change joint collar
- clean shaft

Something similiar to http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=180156312456&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=008 is good, but too expensive for me.

I am just using it as an hobby for my own use.

Please pm me your pictures and total price includding shipping to Singapore.

Thank You

Yeo Boon Hui

IMHO - If you think $400 is too much to do all the operations you
have listed - you are pursuing the wrong hobby.

Doing cue work ain't cheap.

Hi All,

I am not using it to convert house cue.
I am just using it to self-customise my cues, changing tip and ferrule.

For example, I done the following manually, without any machine.
So I am thinking maybe getting a cheap machine will make things easier for me.

Thank You for all your replies. I have already found one from Taiwan that cost about $300 that can do tip and ferrule, but not joint collar. I can just modify it to do joint collar as well.

For this jump cue butt, i cut the groove, and added the copper ring as the joint collar.

I have tried making a "lathe" for shaft cleaning, but it is too noisy with the drill.

In the sixties, I did hundreds of tips and polishes just using a motor and mandrel. There is also a big, big difference between decorative turning and precision turning. Do you think your set-up is precise enough to put on a hard melamine ferrule to about a .001 tolerance on a shaft? I use a 1,500 lb.13X40 engine lathe with a 1,000.00 chuck to install ferrules and joints myself.

Of course my set-up cannot do it!
I have already stated the set-up is for shaft-cleaning, i didnt mention that it is for ferrule/joint changing

Since I am not rich, I cannot afford a good lathe, so I have to look for a cheap lathe that I can afford. And I am only doing it on my own cues, I am not doing on others cue, and I am not earning any money from it. I am just doing it as a hobby (to destroy my cues maybe).

Thank you for your reply.
