Looking for some help with choosing a pool cue in the UK

Thanks for the heads-up garczar, looks like justinb386 shares your opinion. Sounds right to me, so I'll go with that. And thanks about the tip choice too. It seems like a good opportunity to try a high-class tip that's been fitted professionally, not many places in the UK seem to offer that for pool cues. I do my own tips with my snooker cue but a brass snooker ferrule seems less susceptible to accidental damage/un-flattening when removing the old one or trimming the sides of the new tip than a pool cue tip.

justinb386, here is the link for the redheart cue I was looking at

http://schmelkecue.com/billiard-cues/schmelke-cues/r052-redheart-4-prong.html

They don't seem to offer joint No.4 on this cue, unless it's one of the other named options. I guess there must be a 3/8" 10tpi option in wood to wood, it's just called something else? Unless I'd have to ask for it special?

There's a Diveney on ebay at the mo, but it's got a replacement shaft...

There's a Scruggs as well -way outta my league though...

Thanks again everyone
You can get 3/8x10 but you'll want to get black joint collars for support/strength. The 5/16x18 doesn't need any collars.

Thanks again everyone

I see that there is a "3/8" 10 tpi stainless steel pin to wood thread" joint option for that cue (under "Joint Style" options), for an extra $12, and also the Extended Pro Taper option, for an extra $20.

If you can afford it, get a Diveney. You would be really happy with one of those, I imagine. They have an amazing feel, very well weighted, and an amazing hit. Just my opinion.

That ebay seller only ships to the US though.

I had a Scruggs sneaky just like the one you linked (that I got directly from Scruggs back in the late 90's), and I did not care for it. I think the hit was just way too stiff for my liking. The Diveney cues hit much different.

I've owned a Diveney and yes, they are nice BUT they are NOT 300-350dollars nicer than a Schmelke. Prettier to look at,sure.

Yeah, you make a good point. The black joint collars on a wood to wood joint (like a 3/8x10) are very important, for good support of the shaft, I think.

A lot of folks here seem to really like Diveney sneakys. They are still a little bit too much for me though (I'd imagine that a non Diveney shaft would completely change the feel of the ebay cue?).

The only other cue that is making me think now is the Jerico sneaky I mentioned earlier.

Greg Savoie at Billiardwarehouse says he has two in at the moment, both at 19.25oz, which sounds ideal. A little bit more money, but not too much compared to a completely spec'd Schmelke.

He also deals in Schmelke cues (in some case seemingly at better prices than Schmelke?) so I may ask him what he thinks about both as well as I'd be quite happy to buy either through him based on price and what I've read others saying about BW service on this forum.

I have never hit with a Schmelke (other then a few really ugly junkie ones I tried out when I was a kid in the 90's, which is why I had such a bad impression of their cues for such a long time). I never knew that they made high quality cues until very recent years, but I have learned that they do. I am sorry, but I can't imagine the hit of them being anywhere near as nice as a Diveney. Diveney cues are in a league of their own, in my opinion. I can't make my own opinion about Schmelke yet, because I have not had a chance to try one of their new ones out, but I see they are getting a lot of great reviews on here, and I like that they can customize the cue to just about any specs that you want. For $500 to $600, I would go with the Diveney though (if I had the money). Who knows though, I might really love Schmelke cues a lot, if I tried one out. I do not know yet.

I would get the Jerico cue if I were you. They look super nice, and they come with the 3/8x10 joint pin. I see they are custom made too, by a cue maker named Jerry Powers.

Very beautiful cues I think. I imagine they are nice players.

If you end up going with something like a Schmelke and have a few more dollars to spend, I would get an extra shaft (nothing worse than having a tip problem at the worst time and having to use a totally foreign cue) and good tips.

Also, I do understand the concern about having a "flashy" cue when you are still learning, but I would get one at least a little different than the cues at the club (perhaps a different wood in the handle/points). Otherwise you will find your cue being used by random clueless players whenever you head off the to washroom! It may still happen, but if it looks different people may not mistake it for a house cue.

Thanks guys. It seems like Greg Savoie favours a Jerico too, despite rating Schmelkes very highly.

I think I'll email Greg back about getting a Jerico. I'm leaning that way myself and the price difference is pretty negligible. I'll still go with a Kamui tip though.

Wow, there we go. Hopefully ordering my first pool cue

Thanks everyone for all the input  I'll let you know how I get on when it arrives and I'll post some pictures too.

I'll be visiting Manchester some time end of this month, you are welcome to try out my Mezz if you are keen. Where about in UK are you from?
