loose rails on 8' Top Line table

A friend of mine has an 8' Top Line table. The short rails sound funny and don't bounce like the other rails. They seem to have dead areas. I got under the table and tightened the bolts under the rails but this didn't fix the problems. All the rubber on all the rails feels OK, that is they don't feel overly hard or dried out. Any suggestions? Thanks...don

Cushion may have come loose from the subrail and needs reglued.

If the cushion has come unglued in spots you will hear a clapping sound when ball hits it. I see alot of toplines in my area and my experience tells me that the cushions will get more mushy or gummy not hard like other dead rails. They used a pretty cheap cushion to begin with. Where are you located?

The problem seems to be in the 2 short end rails.

Thanks. How do I go about reglueing these cushions?

To get at the cushions unstaple the cloth from the bottom of the rail. Glue wherever you find the cushion loose. Note that you may have a lot of difficulty reattaching the cloth and may wind up needing some fresh rail cloth pieces. More often you'd find a loose cushion at the foot end of the table.
