Oakland Herbie

I met Herbie at the Golden Cue, the room I hung out at in So. Cal in the 70's.

Herbie had a few people with him. One was Sean, a young player from Stockton, who beat everyone he played and would not play me.

Then he had Danny, a foosball player who put on golf gloves and ironed out the best foosball players in the joint. Danny moved to Texas and became a pretty strong pool/one pocket player.

Last but not least, Herbie whipped out the purple painted walnuts with silver sparkle on them and proceeded to get whatever $$ was left playing the shell game. I can't believe people went for it but he had the best gift of gab to go along with the game I have ever seen.

Good ole Herbie

Met Herbie in the late 50's at Cochran's in San Fran when we were young whippersnappers. He always had a hustle along with Bucktooth. I think he was born with that knack. (had to be). The funny thing is I moved away and 30 years later when I bought Fast Eddy's in 1980 he showed up with "The Snake", aka, Mark Haddad. They were hustling and at the time Herbie really didn't remember me. I got in a game with the snake and beat him out of a hundred, and while that was going on Herbie took a bunch of customers upstairs and hustled the shell game. I caught wind and cut if off right away. He just laughed and it was then I let him know who I was and then he remembered how "One Eye Hank" and I outhustled him on the pool table. He was always a blast though and a lot of fun but a sheister.
I know a few years ago he bought a room in Oakland(I think) and Poker Paul tried to go to work for him to try and qualify for Social Security as I don't think Paul worked a day in his life. That was pretty funny at the time. Now Paul is laboring his forte in Vegas.
Hope someone tells him his old buddy is gone.
God Bless you Hebie and condolences to his family.

I only met Herbie once, but I've heard plenty of stories. Was Herbie the one that can fling a playing card across the room?

May he rest in peace.
