One Pocket Legend Louis Alexander Goff aka Jr. or "Lefty"

Does anyone have any stories about Louis Alexander Goff? I am originally from Dothan, Al and I had the pleasure for many years of watching Jr. play. I know he won several big One Pocket trnys back in the 60's. And I know he told me that he won a brand new Cadillac in one of his wins. He would come off of some of his "war stories", but I was just wanting more! Any input would be appreciated. And THANKS in advance!

Here http://www.cues.com/goff.html is a link I found with a article about him.

I know he used to be a champion, but I would just like to know where he stood in the list of past champions. Does he rank in the top 20?50? Does he fit the qualifications to be considered for the One Pocket HOF?

Great link, sizl. You might wanna ask Grady, The Beard, or OldHasBeen about him. I know nothing of the guy, but if he was going on the road with Danny Jones (whom Freddy called a 'master') and them... he's got to be *way* up there.

I knew Junior Goff pretty well.......

I never played him any One Pocket but I know he was extremely good. Saw him play in Johnston City. Very nice fellow & funny. I played him on a bar box somewhere in AL many years ago. All I can remember is that we broke even and his Balabushka was exactly like mine. We both knew it was only one of the three that George made like it and I told him I knew the other one belonged to a player in New Mexico named "Fez".

"Lefty" used to really be protective of that cue. I asked him for years to let me hit a ball with it and he never would let me. Finally after several years of hounding him he broke down and let me hit a few (very few) balls with it. SOLID is all I can say. It has a "glass"(hard clear plastic) butt cap and it would still rate about a 7 on a scale of 10. He sold it to a local poolroom owner back in the 90's. It has been in a safety deposit box since then.

Do you still have yours OHB? If so, would you mind posting some pics of it PLEASE?

Jr Goff

I've been a long time viewer of the az billiards forum but have never been compelled to register or post. I just had to post on this thread .A longtime friend now deceased and former partner of Robin Workman and Peggy Rheams at Starcade Billiards in Fort Walton Beach Fl Andy Grubbs was fond of telling the story of Jr.'s trips to Auburn Alabama to play locals there on one such trip Jr. stops at the Piggly Wiggly and goes into the meat dept and gets a ham. He promptly cuts off the wrapper and wraps it in newspaper. When Andy asks him about it Jr tells him he's been laying down the line he's a pig farmer from Geneva Al. and told them the next time thru he would bring them a ham from his farm. Jr. has been a legend in north Florida, South Alabama, and Georgia for years. He's an old school guy who still drives the parking lot before going the pool room looking at license plates. I love the forum especially stoies about the road warriors. Thanks for letting me post

Mine in Safety Deposit Box, also

My cue is "Put Up" for good. I ran an ad in the Billiard Digest Waaaay back and it had some nice photos. I can let you know the date later. I had it authenticated by John Wright (Chi). In the box with it is a certified offer for $23K from a serious (Dallas Dentist) buyer. That was in '85.
Buddy Hall (to this day) says the cue plays better than ANY cue he has played with. Your correct, SOLID is the best way to describe the hit. The balance point is also PERFECT.
Maybe one of my kids can BUY A HOUSE from it some day.

That is classic "lefty" material. I remember he used to go to the bars (at the age of 70) and order a Pabst Blue Ribbon beer and he would proceed to "lay it down". He would have all the suckers nibbling at his feet, and he would bust them all.

He once was giving some advice to me as a young man. He told me that if you are playing for a jellybean or 2 and the guy don't pay you and tries to mark it on the wire.................It was time to get a sandwich. I know this is basically common knowledge, but you would have to "see" him "tell" the story. It was hilarious!

Andy was a good man, and he did ALOT for me. I used to love to play at Starcade. Rag, do you live in Ft.Walton?

As Sizl said thats vintage Junior. When I was living in Auburn AL there
were still a few guys that knew of LEWIS GOFF. He was Lewis there for
many years. I got to hear all the stories about him beating all the guys there.
I actually played in the same bar ( Railroads) that he hustled in at one time.

I got ot hear quite a few stories as I was lucky enough to be his driver and
"nephew" on a few trips in SO Al and NW Fl. On these trips he would tell
you things with great seriousness. Like he was telling you a secret.
It always amazed me that almost everywhere he went he could get action.
He milked them dead at the VictoryLand lounge outside the dogtrack in
AL. I could not believe how much he would win. He would actually line up marks at the dogtrack. Great stories.
I moved away but a few years back he was telling me "again" about his
numerous trips to Montgomery to play "The Gas Man". I always told him I just did not know who it was. It was about 10 years after hearing the story that I finally found out that an older gentlemen that I knew was "the Gas Man". The next time I saw Junior I told him and he really lit up. I guess through the years JR had really beat this fellow and thought he had layed it
down really well. Come to find out The Gas Man knew who he was but enjoyed all the BS that Jr would come up with and really enjoyed the match.
Junior then went to Montgomery to find the guy and they told story on top
of story.
For a guy in his 70's (77 now I believe) he has a pretty sharp recollection.
Dothan Al in the late 80s was a great place to be for learning and watching pool. Many great matchups and regular games.

Yes I do live in Ft Walton Beach and go to Starcade nearly every day .You're right Andy was a hell of a guy and good friend. He actually grew up in Ozark and lived with Jr in the early 70's. for a while. The last time I Actually saw Jr was at Andy's funeral
