Odd coincidence I was just talking to Gordie Harts daughter today about how I went to the Viking shop in Madison Wi in about 1991 or so and asked them to make me a shaft for a butt that was stashed behind a bar rail in a corner in a tavern that I cleaned and stocked as a kid. By stocking i mean loading up the cooler and leaving a case out back for me, the owner knew and would just give me a smile of “I didn’t see it”. He would of been disappointed if I hadn’t, lol. Memories, never mind the stash under the couch at his house I was welcome to, pays when your mom dates someone she had no reason to be with in regards to lifestyle. The bar owner gave me the super joint butt and a couple shafts that didn’t fit at all, different joints, no idea what I did with them. I proudly convinced my dad to take me about 7 miles to the shop which had the largest pool table I had ever seen in the showroom. 7 miles at that time i was told was a major trip and a massive commitment according to my dad, smh. The table was considerably larger than a snooker table. I think they had a L shaped table also, didn’t really get the point on that one. I asked Viking to make me a 10.5mm shaft and they refused and said 11mm was it. I think it was around $70 to $80. Robin, Gordies daughter told me today they would of made one but wouldn’t of warranted it, I’m sure they didn’t want to explain that to a 14 year at the time. Still have the cue even though I left it at the pool hall i worked at in a soft case over 25 years ago after I upgraded to a Nova because I couldn’t afford a Schon but the script was similar. About 7-8 years ago I l ran into a guy that acquired it when the pool hall closed. I had to buy my cue back, 11mm shaft and all. Son of a bitch put a black ferrule on it and was using it as a break cue. He removed the wrap and was going to refinish it. The original owners name is still in very dull black marker on the butt Sleeve. Pretty sure it was built in 1979. Anyway, I still have my first cue. Anyone else have any long winded stories of falling in love with pool. I did before, but that cue cemented it.
