Hey six pack and all interested parties. The guy you are trying to find out about was named Clarence Kimball. This name comes from a reliable source. When I was a young man an old hustler named Dutch gave me some of the best advice I ever got in my life :

Someday you are going to walk up to that jukebox and the only two songs you know will be Anniversary Waltz and Happy Birthday .

The time will come when a bowel movement will be better than any sexual experience you ever had.

You want to gamble go to Reno. There is no gamble in pool. You just play the guys that can't beat you.

If you see two guys shaking hands in a pool room one of them is a sucker.

And best of all.....don't believe anything you hear about pool and only believe half of what you see with your own two eyes.

Jerry, I am going to steal that "two guys shaking hands.." bit and put it in my edited version of Banking With The Beard in the Kilroy's Rules of the Road Department. It's just too good.
I heard stories of Clarence Kimball. I was told he was one of the most cold-blooded pool killers of all time. When he was done with you, you needed a week in Rehab. However, no story went so far as to say he had any chance playing Nineball with Lassiter.

Bank on, brother!

To THE BEARD

Was corroborated by two different people who would have known. The infamous " BUCKTOOTH " who I have known for almost 50 years . ( I gave him the name BUCKTOOTH. Prior to that he was known as Oakland Richie.)

The other guy was "SNEAKY GEORGE LEE". Another Damon Runyon type character. Not a great player but a smart player. Booked winners. Never went bust.

Did you ever play out here in California ? Where were you in 1962 when they had the one pocket tournament at Cochran's in San Francisco.

You are more than welcome to that phrase "shaking hannds". Another guy I heard that from was Arthur Berman (New York Rex).

I heard many stories about Clarence Kimball from 3 cushion champ Bud Harris from when he spent several years in Chicago's Bensingers, on leave from Cochrans in San Francisco. He told me Kimball was a 5x10 table specialist. I played a lot in Hollywood. at the Ye Olde Billiard Den but I never made it to Frisco. My pal, George Michaels moved there to go into business with my old backer Mike Weldon. It that the New York Rex that played 3 cushion, moved to Vegas and won 25k playing Keno and then was called Keno Rex?

Freddie,
Never heard the Keno story but he was a hell of a 3 cushion player especially for his age. He was young when he came out to California. Under 30.
The story about Clarence beating Lassiter is believable because they played on a 5 X 10 in Cochran's on Market Street.

You mentioned Ye Olde Billiard Den on Santa Monica Blvd. When I left Alameda to move to Hollywood Rex told me about 2 spots. Hollywood Billiards on Western Ave and Hollywood Blvd and The Billiard Den.

I remember like it was yesterday Rex said : you can find someone to play your speed in Hollywood but you cannot beat ANYBODY in The Billiard Den. The guy that cleans the bathrooms can run 100 balls.

When I went there it was quickly discovered how right he was. Never saw that many players in one spot since Cochran's.

When the book is printed I would like an autographed copy. I'll send you a check in advance. In 14 months I am retiring and moving to Thailand. Lot of Snooker played there.

Thanks for the interesting information. I really enjoy learning more history about pool here in the Bay Area. It's a rich history and unfortunately, it seems like pool in this area is in a slow patch right now.

Thanks!
