Machinists' Level

For an amateur installer, an 18" Starrett machinist level works fine. For a professional installer, a 12" Starrett is more ideal, as it allows you to better see peaks and valleys in the slate. I use a series of (9) 12" Starrett levels on each slate.

I'm just going to mention, you can also buy these used on ebay. I got mine for about a quarter of what they cost new. Mine was dead nuts when I got it but you can calibrate them with a square.

It could make sense to buy a new one if you were in the business of table installation but if you're only going to use it a few times a year used can be an option.
 
I have a couple more 12s and another 8. Just doing a little calibrating.
Only 1 of them was purchased new. Got most of them for around $100
Assembled one from parts purchased separately.
