Magic Chalk & ChicagoRJ Review

The whole humidity issue and the fact that tests were done on different days was the main issue I had with Dr. Dave's testing... MC and Silver Cup were done on a different day than the others... Humidity and other variables will change the friction properties of the chalk, balls, cloth and tip... Without controlling environmental variables I do not think the test results are accurate.

I also have looked at the sound wave forms of the video and while Dave could not detect slippage prior to misscue there were peaks on shots where the ball looked to not take all of the english that should have been imparted that indicate there was some slippage occuring or maybe one side of the tip had a hard spot or glue layer exposed...

Dave later redid the tests again on a different day and MC was down at 17 before misscue... He has rewritten the chalk section on his site several times since the first version and even retested the MC AGAIN after bias was established from having posted results...

I don't think Dave would ever consciously skew the data but I think after the initial results bias sets in. Bias can affect confidence and since stroke quality is also a factor even unconsciously it could have had an effect.. I would love to see someone without bias try the same test and publish the results.....

Based on use and microscopic examinations I am very interested and yes I manufacture and sell the Great White chalk so I do have bias even tho we were not in the test group so I cannot do the tests without skepticism being involved....

I would like to see Silver Cup, Master, Triangle, NIB, LAVA, Blue Diamond, Magic Chalk, NIR, Balabushka, Kamui .98 and Kamui 1.21 and our Great White put thru the paces.... You might even want to do Green Master AND Blue Master and throw in a piece of pre-flag...

Chris

Well my test wasn't controlled or scientific in the least. I admitted that from the outset. All I know is I could never do with Blue Diamond what I was able to do with MC. I plan on trying out some of your stuff too Chris. And when I do I'll review it as well. I love your Accu-Rack templates and I should be getting a soft Ki-Tech soon from JP for a cube of magic chalk. Maybe with the Ki-Tech I can do a side by side comparison of MC and Great White?

Thanks for the BUMP :) man, as much as you come in the MC threads, I'm willing to throw you a free box. Do you live anywhere near The Thaiger. I will mail it to him, and you guys can share it ;)

I thought they were one and the same??? What am I missing???

Nothing wrong with your test to form your own opinion... Confidence is key and being confident in a product is sometimes as important as the ptoduct itself in this strange game.... If you are happy with the MC that is really all that matters... I say the same thing about tips.. If you find something you really love I'd rather you keep using it and enjoying the game than put some money in my pocket when you already have what may be your perfect tip.. Now if the love affair gets cold and it's time for a new tip ;P Look us up LOL

I finally decided to see what all the hullabaloo was about with this chalk, so I took the plunge and ordered some from RJ. I could type about this chalk for the next 2 hours (I'm a slow typist), but I would not be saying anything that hasn't already been said in this thread...

Great chalk!!! I love the way it goes on the tip when applied...and while it may be "new chalk" syndrome, I do feel it grips the cue ball better than the BD I'd been using. I play with Ultraskins...relatively new ones...and I do have to chalk twice during a game of eight-ball...but I've been playing by myself, so I guess that'd be only once per "player"! ;)

Although, it turned out to be more expensive than I was originally expecting (LOL) due to the fact that I ordered a new Aramith Measle cue ball since Magic Chalk wipes off the cue ball with ease after each game and doesn't leave marks on the ball like the BD I'd been using!!!

I definitely recommend giving this chalk a shot...and if you don't feel like switching from Blue Diamond, I'll probably have 6 boxes for sale pretty soon...I don't expect to using them anymore! :)

p.s. Special thanks to Dr. Dave for taking the time to conduct the experiments on Magic Chalk...it's like having our very own Bill Nye for pool!!!

I bought some Magic Chalk from Seybert's three weks ago. So far, partial use one cube, I am impressed.

I like the way MC covers the tip evenly with one or two light strokes, unlike Masters where I have to chalk and chalk to get an even layer - one stroke adds some chalk but takes away chalk previously applied, so I have to work a bit to get an even application. Magic Chalk applies evenly without any hassle.

I have tried multiple shots without re-applying Magic Chalk, but my habit is to chalk up for every shot, so that is what I plan to continue to do. I see no sense in tempting fate, tempting a mis-cue just because MC or any chalk has been tested for multiple shots without re-chalking.

I have only played maybe ten hours since getting the Magic Chalk. So far no mis-cues, but maybe there would not have been any miscues using Master chalk either, I don't know. I know the Magic Chalk is such an improvement in the way it goes on and stays on the tip that I plan to keep a supply on hand for everyday use.

No, guys, sorry, you can't borrow my Magic Chalk, I only brought the one cube, but here's some Silver Cup, you are welcome to use it, matter of fact you can keep it - How good does the Silver Cup chalk work? I don't know, as far as I can tell, it works as just good as it always has... no, no, you can keep that Silver Cup chalk, no charge, no need to return it, you're very welcome.

If You Don't Miscue Because You Chalk Every Other Shot.....

Miscues are typically not a problem as I seldom use Extreme English and when I do have to use up to 2 full tips or more off center....I measure twice and cut once. In order words, I know that the cue tip hit is more prone to deflect off the cue ball if not carefully struck, especially since I play with a nickel tip that I've shaped more akin to a silver dollar shape.....pretty flat.

So I know miscues are more likely and I pay special attention and am careful.....so I don't tend to miscue, except for maybe occasionally when power stroking on a break shot. I haven't tried the white chalk and would if it came in a different color......say teal or blue......I just don't want a chalk color would stand out on the green cloth from debris.......some guys just core the heck out of their chalk and even though I don't chalk that way, white chalk when used by others will deposit on the table cloth.....I've cleaned pool tables that had Kamui chalk debris, white chalk, gray chalk flakes......you name it......and the white really stands out.

A piece of Blue Diamond chalk will last me well over 6 months.....I go through a box (2 cubes) every 15 months or so my chalk cost is cheap. My chalk lasts because I swipe or brush the chalk on my cue tips and the cube wears pretty evenly that way. At the same time, you can shoot a lot of shots using Blue Diamond without having to chalk.....I dunno know how many.....6....8....10.....it doesn't matter to me because I always chalk every other shot......it is called a pre-shot routine or shooting habit......been doing it for 5 decades now and I am not going to change because of a new chalk compound........every other shot never fails and on any hard shots that have to be deliberated, I will just reapply chalk out of habit regardless if I just chalked on the previous shot......I've got enough chalk for a long time before I need to buy any........the MC sits at home as I don;t even carry it in my case any longer.
