March 1st my Pool Room is becoming non-smoking, of my own doing.
I personally quit 5 yrs ago and the smoke is really starting to bother me.

My family is known for cronic heart disease and I do want to live a little longer. Im having trouble breathing from being in the smoke all day and night and I can`t afford good smoke eaters that work good enough.

This could work in my favor, this will be a first in this area and I sure hope it works out, but if it don`t work i`ll just be unemployed for a while.

I have made them smoke outside for a while now, during leagues and tourneys without many complaints.

Wish me luck and if I go down that will be more players for you guys L.O.L.

Good luck highrun!
I'm sick of working in a smoking environment. I worry about my health every day working in the poolroom. People plop down in front of me with their cigarettes and ashtrays, not only can I not breathe then I go home stinking to high heaven. But, I chose this profession so I'll quit my *****in...there are too many poolrooms around me to go non smoking.
I have met people who say they would like to play pool but, complain about the smoke, I hope you have customers like that too.
I wish you much success.

This is GREAT news and I am very excited that you have choosen to go the NON-SMOKING route. Since Pennsylvania will probably be the next to last state in the nation (next to Virginia, home to Phillip Morris corporate headquaters) to go smoke free I wish you continued success in your pool room and hope that this decision will increase your business.

No more going home and having to undress in the garage to keep your smokey clothing from poluting the air in your home. No more having to Fabreeze your cue wrap and cue case to rid it of the horrible smoke smell either. Congratulations on a desicion that eventually be best for all human beings.

Thanks

Kevin

Yes, best of luck to you making this stand. I wish you good health and success.

Doesn't PA have this on the table now to be voted on or did it get shot down?

I think PA wants to vote on it but the voting is not on an across the board type of ban. They want to allow some establishments to be able to allow smoking and some not. At least thats the way I understand it, thus in turn the difficulty in getting the ban passed. In my opinion if you don't make all establishments follow the same rules you will have nothing but problems which is what PA is up against right now. I hope the powers to be quickly come to that realization and follow the other states and do the across the board smoking ban. We will slowly have to wait and see.

Ahh if I am not mistaken, and I very well may be :D. When it was passed in NY, they at first said private clubs (Ie, American Legion, Elks, VFW, etc) were exempt from the ban, then they amended the ban to say "any work place" meaning if there was one employee, smoking was out.

At least that's how it was presented to us at the Legion meetings way back when.

Of course, with me being right on the NY/PA border, you can definitely see the impact on the bar business.

Good Luck!

Pa. needs to pass this bill with no exceptions for special interests .
Email or call your state reps. to move this out of senate-house committee
this is where it is now .
the politicians will come out with a real ban when the people's will is demanded to be followed
over 80% want it gone now!
The places where smoking is allowed should have to pay extra for insurance if they want to poison the people who work and go there!
Lawsuits will eventually stop the cancer causing secondhand smoke and make it unprofitable!

By the way Maryland's smoking ban is effective on Feb 1 2008
The country's that have a ban is growing! Italy- France are a few new ones.
How about Ireland and Britain who would have thought?

This is a nice idea for health reasons and helping out non-smokers who pley. On the other hand just about every single pool room in MA that does not have a bar in it has closed down within a year or 2 after the state banned smoking. Mr. Billiards, Chalkies, Brighton Billiards, MetroWest Lanes, I'm sure the list is longer, but those are just the ones I visited most often. About the only rooms still doing well are the so-called "upscale rooms" that are pretty much pick-up places, Jillians and Boston Billiards.
