Making $$ running tournaments...

Need some insight on how Tournament directors make money running events.
For example, a very common format will be..
$1000 added, $50 entry fee.
Suppose 50 players sign up. Total purse is $3500
My questions are:
1) How much of the purse does the TD keep?
2) If its 100% payout the TD gets nothing?
3) Who adds the $1000, the host location or the TD or both?
4) Does the host location get a piece of the purse?

I don't have any answers except a little tidbit that a stock car driver answered when asked about making money. He said the way to make a small fortune in racing is to start with a large one. I think the same applies to tournaments. I think there was a thread about this concerning the Glass City Open.

All tournaments on the scale you describe should really be considered advertising for the host room as well as sponsors whose names are attached to the tournament and they should cover all the costs with the payout being 100% plus the added and that includes the TD's fee. There is no reason the players should have to pay for the running of the tournament. They have already paid their travel expense as well as an entry fee, screw green fees. If the room owner doesn't think the tournament is worth it to him, then don't have it. Just my opinion.

So in your opinion, the TDs fee is something that is negotitated by the TD and the room owner and sponsors?? Just trying to get a better understanding of how this works...

Mike Janis is one of the most successful TDs I know. You may be able to contact him and get some good info on the subject.

Mike

It's proprietary information.

But here is a little insight. If I had to only make money off just running events I would be in another line of business.

It's business arangment between him/her and the room owner. Some TD's are worth more then others. A TD that can bring in name players and added value to the tournament is worth a lot more to the room owner then just a guy who handles the running of the tournament for a few hours. A good tournament director may even take care of press releases and flyers, utilize boards like this and have a web sites with schedules. Just sitting there running the tournament in it's self isn't worth much, the room owner can do that himself or find someone in the room who will do it for nothing, there is a lot more to it.

Oh yeah I totally agree with you on the TD doing all the legwork to promote the tournament...
