Bata, Django advance; qualifier upsets Parica

EFREN “BATA” Reyes was quick to do his part, but Jose “Amang” Parica couldn’t keep pace.

The top seeded Reyes made short work of upsetconscious Jerome Peña, 9-1, at the start of the Hope P1-Million ($20,000) All-Filipino Billiards Open at the AMFPuyat Billiards Hall in Ever Gotesco Commonwealth.

But upstart Richard Aguilar put the much-anticipated clash between two old rivals in jeopardy by edging Parica, 9-8.

Aguilar, a surprise qualifier, made full use of his victory in the lag to relegate his legendary opponent to the losers’ bracket.

Several months of inactivity didn’t seem to bother Parica, but Aguilar was too hot to handle yesterday.

Reyes’ match was a no contest. The charismatic pool champion raced to a 7-0 lead and never looked back in the alternate break affair.

Defending champion Francisco "Django" Bustamante was as sharp. He manhandled veteran Antonio "Nickoy" Lining, 9-1.

Also winning in the opener of the event sanctioned by the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines (BSCP) headed by Ernesto Fajardo were Alex Pagulayan, Warren Kiamco, Jeffrey De Luna and Caro Biado.

Pagulayan, the reigning world pool champion, proved too much against the struggling Lee Vann Corteza, 9-2; Kiamco showed flashes of his old deadly form in a 9-4 win over fellow heavyweight Antonio Gabica; De Luna shocked Rodolfo Luat, 9-4; and Biado overwhelmed Asian Tour mainstay Gandy Valle, 9-1.

The matches pitting the main attractions of the four-day event supported by Puyat Sports boss Aristeo "Putch" Puyat and Jemah Television boss Marc Roces will be aired on IBC-13 from 8:30 to 11 p.m.
