Mark Wilson is GREAT

Why not make the qualifying an event in itself?

To add to my first post I want to present an idea for qualifying. The qualifying would be a two stage process that is pretty fair, and marketable.

Stage 1 would be 24 hrs of elimination.

Stage 2 would be final selection.

Stage 1 would be similar to an NFL combine... something similar to the PAT test. Each participant pays to have a chance to give put their skill to the test in front of an official score keeper. 50% of the money goes to the team to cover future expenses and 50% goes to the cost of the qualifying event. Anyone can participate and you can try as many times as you can afford but only the top scores make it to stage 2. The test have to be extremely tough to ensure that the players who make it are top tier professionals. The test can also be marketed and sold to players who have no desire to play in the cup but would like to practice the skills test.

Stage 2 is about taking the best of the best and narrowing them down to the final 5. Streamed event that not only serves as a team selection but also builds excitement for the main event.

I agree, but that doesn't make every decision a correct one. I think Mark let personal feelings influence the selection process. I'm not saying we would win but choosing Schmidt and not even looking at MD deserves some skepticism. I'm not a MD hugger but I am aware of our Best players. I think Mark is great but the player selection is a little hard to understand .

+1

Here is how I see it.

To get straight to the point. WE SEND OUR BEST.

This means setting up some sort of system for letting the young guns prove they are better than what are recognized as the best. If they can't beat the veterans yet then they don't earn the spot on the team. If the veterans can no longer beat the up and comers then they no longer make it on the team. There should be some kind of merit based system in place though imo to see the best results as a coach. This could be as simple as organizing a qualifying weekend where all of the best players come to compete in a fair tryout competition. The players travel for tournaments all the time with much less prize money than making the cup team would net.

Once you have your team then Marks "leaddrship" could play a roll in making them gel as a team or preparing them to go out there and represent the US properly... make us proud. I would say that Mark has a better chance of teaching Rodney not to cuss on TV than he does teaching a second their professional how to beat Daz, Niels, Mike etc. Even Earl can be managed with proper leadership. If Mark can't teach guys this simple task and bring together a team then maybe hes not so great afterall. But I'm going to bet that he can. In fact Johnny, Rodney, Hatch, Dechaine are all good guys anyway and forming a team that acts respectable would not be tough if you make it clear what you want as the leader, as their coach.

A Coach Coaches, they teach and prepare you until blood leaks from your eyes.
In crunch time a coach is there for you mentally, your physical skills are already in place, it's the mental state that needs the help, not so much the physical. Your fundamentals get you through.
It's your mental state that makes you slam your cue, curse, or lash out at whatever.
A team of all stars does not mean they will win.

Great coaches have taken inferior teams to World Championships.Win or lose they fight tooth and nail until the buzzer rings. You can see the blood pouring out of their eyes until the last second or last out of the game.

All I saw was blood coming out of their ears, they were hemorrhaging.
It got worse and worse, the coach himself sat there like a deer in the headlights.
A team of all stars does not mean they will win.
