Seems like short races. Is this Predator rules, at least to minimize luck? In any case best wishes for the tournament.

Thanks for your interest and wishes for a good event. Experience with these one day events has shown that 10-ball tournaments can take a good bit longer to finish than 9-ball events. It seems that the no-slop rules, more congestion of balls, and more safety play all contribute to this in 10-ball.

Top players can move through 10-ball races of 7/5 at a good pace, but the alternate break format can make for long matches at times even between better players. For more typical players that make up most of the field, 10-ball can be a challenge with few racks run and many racks involving lots of safety exchanges. For these reasons it can be difficult to finish a one day tournament like this in a reasonable time with longer races.

The World Pool-Billiard Association rules of play for 10-ball can be found at the following link:

2014 Maryland Open 10-Ball Championship Results

June 21, 2014 – Big Daddy’s Billiards. Glen Burnie, Maryland.

Twenty seven players came out to Big Daddy’s Billiards to compete in the 2014 Maryland Open 10-ball championship. Special recognition goes out to players such as Dan Madden, Danny and Joey Mastermaker, and Bruce Nagle who drove in excess of 3 hours to participate.

Some earlier round top half of the draw match-ups saw Alan Duty come away hill-hill against Dan Madden, and Dave Hennessy prevail against Brett Stottlemyer. Meanwhile, in the lower half of the draw, Bruce Choyce came through against Tom Zippler and Danny Mastermaker won against Steve Fleming.

As the tournament progressed, Dave Hennessy used wins over Bruce Nagle and Alan Duty to reach the hot seat match. Matt Krah did likewise against Danny Mastermaker and Bruce Choyce to meet up with Dave. Dave came out the winner here against Matt to claim the hot seat.

After going to the one loss side early, Brett Stottlemyer found his form and went on a roll with 7 consecutive victories to make his way through to the final.

The final between Dave Hennessy and Brett Stottlemyer continued with the tournament’s double elimination format. With Brett coming from the one-loss side, he would have to defeat Dave twice to win.

The final’s first race to 7 games saw a back and forth battle with each player taking games until the score was even at 4 all. Dave then took the next 2 games to reach the hill. Undeterred, Brett came back to tie it at hill-hill. It then appeared that Dave would close out the match as he broke and ran through the rack to an awkward cut angle on the 10 ball. The ball just rattled out of a corner pocket which allowed Brett to pocket it and take the first set.

The final race to 5 games saw Dave strike first by sinking a quick 2 - 10 combination. The players then went back and forth until the score reached 2 all. Dave emerged from a long safety battle to take the next game and then followed that with another to reach the hill at 4 - 2. Brett came back to reach 3 - 4 but Dave was not to be denied as he closed out the final game to claim the title.

Thanks go out to Big Daddy’s owners Cindy and Rick Molineiro, tournament director Debbie Davis, and all of the players and fans. In addition, Ozone Billiards is gratefully acknowledged for their continuing support of the 2014 Maryland Championship 8-ball, 9-ball, and 10-ball tournaments by providing beautiful cue cases as prizes at each event.

Results:

1 - Dave Hennessy: $420
2 - Brett Stottlemyer: $275
3 - Matt Krah: $180
4 - Tom Zippler: $110
5/6 - Bruce Choyce and Alan Duty: $60 each
