Given the state of pool today, and in particular straight pool, I think everyone should recognize the efforts of pool room owners like Rick and Cindy Molineiro. Rick, Cindy, and Peter Burrows put forth an incredible effort organizing and running the Maryland straight pool tournament which has become a tradition for east coast straight pool fans. The atmosphere at Big Daddy’s is always welcoming, all the food is fantastic, especially Cindy’s habit forming tuna salad! Rick worked tirelessly to get the tables in perfect condition and was paid off with multiple 100 ball runs courtesy of Mr. 400 John Schmidt. Peter Burrows does a great job organizing and coordinating with the players and even opens his home to the players before the tournament for a nice cocktail party – thanks again Peter! From a fans perspective it is a great opportunity to meet world class players, see top shelf straight pool, and mingle with other straight pool fanatics. As always there were some incredible matches. You had Schmidt handing out 100 ball runs and firing in shots most folks couldn’t make in their dreams, Dave Daya showing why he’s straight pool’s secret weapon and a first class gentleman to boot, and two matches in particular showcasing the meaning of “heart”. Our hats are off to Zion Zvi and Brandon Shuff who orchestrated herculean comebacks against Jose Parica and Mike Davis respectively to advance. Others have done a great job reporting the action so in closing I again want to give a huge thank you to Big Daddy’s Billiards, Rick and Cindy Molineiro, and Peter Burrows for helping keep the great game of straight pool alive. Hope to see all the 14.1 forum fans there next year!
