Match up with local players

I am wondering if there is a way to find players to match up with locally w/o having to drive to the pool hall first? I know it sounds cheap, but not only for the cost of gas (which is not insignificant) but for the time involved also.

It would be kind of cool to be able to log in, find a player looking for a game....gambling or not, certain establishment or not....in a given area or expanded area. I wouldn't want to have anything deprive businesses of their patrons "off table" business, but feel that with today's transportation costs it may help the establishments to get more business if used a lot.

Is there anything out there or in conjunction with this site to do such a thing? I just know that I personally would be more inclined to go the half hour drive each way to any of the halls if I knew that a game was there before I left.

Pros/cons? Input? Feel free to comment.

I normally just call the pool room to see if anyone is there. I would suggest exchanging phone #'s with the obligatory "guy who is always there" - most rooms have the "guy who is always there" and he can ask if someone wants to match up.

I believe that is what a telephone is for.:) Hopefully the person behind the counter knows a little something about pool and the players that come in to know/ask if anyone wants action.
But to even bring this up, the word nit instantly pops into my head!:D If you are worried about $20 bucks in gas, what stakes are you matching up for? A buck a game or something?

I'm just talking about playing pool. I didn't say I wanted to gamble. Part of the fun of the game for me is to play other people than I usually do. I know for all the self professed "gamblers" out there NONE can even imagine anyone playing just for the fun of the game anymore. For those people I hope they can relearn their love of the game, or if their love is only the need of a gamble I wish them (you?) the best.

There is a stewardship concern here for wastefullness of resources and quality of air. I doubt that would be part of your decision, but it is mine. As to the $, my time is FAR more valuable than the costs.

Thanks for your viewpoint though. I asked, so I took the time to respond also. Best wishes.

I, for one, have always wanted to put a list of people in my local area that would be willing to gamble and those who will play for fun, with their numbers and approxamite skill level so that I can help people find their "action" weather it be for fun, cheap sets, or big money games.

This of course has its draw backs. By doing so, people could get to know me as a person that knows every player and would want to know exactly what a perticular players skills are. This could be detrimental to the players I match up and could hurt pool even more.

Although, I do believe that if done right a list of contacts could be just what a pool area needs. It would get people in there to have fun and to feed their inner "gambling monster" while respecting those they match up against without having to worry about being trapped by a lock artist.

I live within 15 miles from 6 pool halls and I believe that building a list of this sort would be good for the area. It could help those whos time is valuable to them and only have a certain timeframe in which they can play. This kind of list would give them a way to work it into their schedule echonomically. And this way they can get a game set up in a place where they don't have to drive as far and play at a place that suits their playing talents (i.e. loose pockets, no alcohol, bar box, big tables, snooker or golf, ect.).

Basicly I'm just saying that a particular governing body or a "go to guy" might not be such a bad idea for all.

Sorry for the rant...... Thanks for listening.

That's a little bit like what I was wondering about. Apparently none exist, but I was thinking of online (so not as personal as giving out private phone #s) thing where you log in, link to your area...see a number of people on line at that time...chat..make up a time to meet and play, who and where. Kind of like what happens here, but none of the hijacking of threads. Maybe a sticky that links to 'gamematchup' or something.

I didn't know if anything like that was a part of AZB or not, or if it existed elsewhere. I surely wasn't looking for negativity, just another way for the game to move forward. Win/win. For the vast majority I would think that have traditional jobs, families, g/f or b/f, etc. that don't have the time or patience to hang out waiting (been there, done that) for a game to come in the door it would be cool. Maybe it's too futuristic....but I can see it happening easily here, sort of like the chat page on TAR.
