Hi,

Just wondering if anyone know where I would be able to find 5/16-14 shaft inserts for the Mcdaniel 5/16-14 pin. I have a few 5/16-14 inserts but they don't seem to fit his pin. I also try some Schon shafts and it didn't fit either? Can the regular 5/16-14 brass insert be retapped?

Anyone know how i can modified the regular 5/16-14 insert to fit on McDaniel piloted 5/16-14 pin?

Thanks,
Duc.

I hope this question didn't stump anyone. Just trying to figure out how Mcdaniel pin are different from the regular 5/16-14 thread. I understand he had his pin and insert custom made by Atlas. Is the pitch slightly different?

Thanks,
Duc.

Not really stumped Duc. I do a lot of repairs and provide shafts for different makes so I've encountered such variances that cuemakers add to their products to make it exclusive.

I found out that the McDaniel's joint pin has slightly oversized teeth but still is 14 threads/inch and 7.85mm OD. Here's a little trick that I'll share with you. Run your Atlas 5/16-14tpi tap through the brass insert while chucked on your lathe (I have 3 channels on my inserts so that helps keep the brass insert from rotating while chucked) BUT.....heat-up your tap, with a butane torch, before doing your pass. Heating up will expand the tap a little and that's all you need.

Edwin, out of curiosity, would this not mess with the heat treating of the tap? Thanks.

To a degree but..considering the materials that we use these taps on. Also, the cost for the tap can be prorated into the price of the shafts that its used for of which I'd rather do than not be able to make the sale. Just a pair of shafts to fit McDs can offset the cost of this used depreciated tap and the newly purchased one for the more important primary tasks. Simply Shop Economics 101.

Duc, you might want to ask Royce at OB-1 shaft about it. I can't remember the exact detail but I ordered a Ob-1 shaft for my friend's McDaniel and it wouldn't go on.

After finding out that it was for McDaniel cue, Royce said if had H2(?) tap, we can open the thread on existing insert. I think my friend ended up sending the shaft back to Royce for repair but he's been fairly faithful OB-1 user since that time.

Thanks Jazz.. that sound like a better idea. I was thinking of making a few extra shaft for my mcdaniel and the regular issue doesn't fit. I've actually tried re-thread but it's still kinda tight and I don't want mess up the original pin.

Regards,
Duc.
