McDermott Cue Owners - Question

Have any McDermott owners here sent in their cue for the free maintenance plan? Their website says you can do it twice a year and that they'll resand and refinish your shaft, put a new tip on, and various other things for free (well, for $14.95 but that includes the cost to ship it back to you).

Just wondering if it's a good deal and if it make a difference? I've had my cue for almost exactly a year now. I've still got the original tip on it and it seems to be in good shape, it hasn't mushroomed or anything like that.

My shaft is a little rougher than when it was new but nothing horrendous.

How was the service? They say they'll ship the cue back within 5 - 7 days. If that's really the case, I might go ahead and give it a try.

Any thoughts on the whole thing?

My friend shoots with a McD. He's had it for about 8 or 9 months now and he has sent it in once to have it refined. When he got it back, he loved it.

Although nearly a week without a cue to play with, I don't know if I could take it!

I have one and sent it in a while ago for the first maintenance. When it came back, it was in better shape than it was when I bought it. All in all, I think it's a good value and service if you can't do things yourself.

I have another cue maker put do my tip work and stuff. But I had a nick in my wrap and it was taken care of when I sent it in for the maintenance plan.

If your shaft feels rough, try cleaning it then burnishing it with a piece of leather. With mine, it feels rough because it's dirty. If you like McD, they have a good cleaner, slick, and burnisher. If you search the forum, you'll find many threads that tell about different cleaning methods. I have the McD cleaner for now, but will use something less expensive when it's gone.

Hope this helps,
Craig

<Edit: I have a few spare cues, so I didn't really mind the 5-7 days>

It depends how long you can go without it. If the tip doesn't need to be replaced you can have it done locally with a cue maker or repair guy at a local pool hall for $10. It will take out any dings and look like brand new.
Sending it in is a great option if you do not have anyone near you to do the job. I clean and polish my shafts myself, and have tip replacement or dings taken care of professionally.

i would say just do it but then again i live 20 mins from McDermott

p.s. im so happy i got my McDermott to day:D :D :D :D :p

Can't comment specifically on your situation but I sent my McD (purchased in 1999) back to the factory last year.

I got 2 new shafts made and had the linen wrap replaced with a nice black leather wrap, all for about 230 bucks including shipping. I was very pleased.

I believe you can trust them

I just got mine back. I sent it in and it was a couple weeks to get it back. I talked to Jamie and he said they were a bit backed up. It took a little more than 2 weeks.
I sent in an I2 shaft that was a bit dinged up. It came back smooth as silk, with a new moori medium on it.

It really did suck not having it for a couple weeks. I went 2 and out in the local Friday night 8 ball tourney 2 weeks in a row shooting with my cuetec python (plastic POS) I was excited to get it back, and being without it for as long as it took just convinced me to buy another one, so I can rotate them out.

Send it in, it's well worth the effort.
