McDermott cue question…

I really enjoy the specific hit of the early meucci cues-specifically the high deflection whippy kinda feel particularly of the shafts. These being the classic no dot shafts. Yet, the collector drive on these has forced prices too high for me to make that investment for an everyday player particularly at my age and no more than I play. I believe I recall the McDermott cues during that same time period played very close. Any thoughts on this as the mcd pricing is way better.
I‘m interested in a regular length player with no stainless material and a shaft around 12.25 or so that’s straight and the shaft good and smooth. I want to spend less than 300. Any thoughts- and thx.

I think the McDermotts with the regular shaft, not the G core might be what you want. They aren’t that expensive for a plain one. If you just order new there’s a warranty but I don’t know about ordering the non standard diameter. Well, I know you can do it but don’t know how it would affect returns or warranty.

In my previous dealing with McDermott turning down the shaft no lower than 11.75 does not affect the warranty. Cost to have the shaft turned down is $60 according to the website.

You can buy the GS series McDermott with their standard shaft in sizes as small as 11.75mm at no extra charge....and it is guaranteed for life against warpage.

I don't think today's McD cues play like those you remember (C or D). And, they are priced like Meucci Originals.

Look online for a butt you like, and try to find a Predator Z shaft.

I don’t think a Predator Z would hit anything like an old Meucci. I can’t say for sure what the regular McDermott shaft would be like. The G Core I have played with and it’s not like an old Meucci. I had a Meucci in the ‘80’s like the poster mentioned. I think the new Meucci pro shaft is good. Better than what I recall of my 80’s one. But it isn’t quite as whippy. Meucci still hits soft but it isn’t identical to the old original shafts IMO

I probably should have mentioned a new Meucci with the pro shaft to the OP but I didn’t. He can find new ones online for 400-500 for some plain models with the 12.5 pro shaft. It was above his price range but it is fairly low risk to try out from PoolDawg or Seyberts or similar with good return policies. The new pro shaft hits nice IMO. I never had a red dot or black dot. To me spending a little more for new with a good return policy is worth it, but not to everyone.

A guy at the pool hall picked up an E-Series McDermott and let me hit some balls with it today. It’s a good cue, hits nice. It doesn’t hit like what I remember my ‘80’s Meucci hit like. My new Meucci with the Pro shaft hits more like an old Meucci than the old McDermott does IMO. If you want the old Meucci hit you may have to get an old Meucci. IMO the new pro shaft is great and the new Meuccis work for me. You won’t get one for 300, but if you spend a little more you might be happy with it.
