McDermott I-Shaft

Hey All,

I was doing some searching around the forums and found a similar thread but it was a bit dated and I've been told the construction of the I-Shaft has changed since then.

I currently shoot with a Bob Frey custom SP. I'm looking to upgrade to a high performance shaft from the original stock shaft. Right now I'm stuck in deciding between the OB-1 and the McDermott I-2 shaft. There's tons to read about the OB but literature on the I-shafts has been a struggle to come up with.

Right now I'm leaning towards the I-2. My question is this:
Does anyone that HAS the I-2, or any of the I-shafts for that matter, have any comments on the feel? (I know it's a highly subjective term), but my main concern is the carbon fiber core rather than a solid wood composition.

Thanks for any comments!

I don't have an I-shaft, but I do have a G-Core. And since your concern is about the carbon fibre core I'll at least give you my opinion as a porition of the G-Core has a carbon fibre core. I notice no real change in the feel when hitting the ball then my previous standard shaft. I do notice that it seems more consitant with my hits tho, which is a very subjective and impossible to quantify. Maybe it's due to the enhanced radial consitancy the carbon fibre core gives it, maybe it's just because the wooden shaft I had before just wasn't very good, or maybe I've fallen for snake oil. But, I'm very happy with it and have no intention of going back to a normal shaft.

Liked it!

I fitted a blank I 2 to friends cue. I didn't think I would like it. It felt too light, and had about a 1/4 inch ferrule.
It played awesome! It felt really solid, and I felt I had to stay closer to ctr ball because I was getting more english than my shaft. I bought one for myself, but haven't been able to fit it to my cue yet.

McDermott I Shaft

McDermott has 3 different I shafts, an I-1 for feel (softer hit), an I-2 for normal performance, an a I-3 for a stiffer hit. All have some low deflection (LD). The do not have as much LD as the 314-2/Z-2 or the OB-1/OB-2, but certainly more than a normal wood shaft. The I-2 I've played before performed fine, but it was VERY light, around 3.3 or 3.4 oz.. That changed the balance of the cue A LOT (making it feel butt heavy). I don't know the weight of the I-1 or I-3. The retail on all 3 I series shafts are $249, a little cheaper than Predator and a little more than OB.

Shot with all three!

About five years ago I purchased a new McDermott with a flat faced joint and 3/8x10 pin. I ordered standard, I-1, I-2, I-3 shafts. The I-3 is 11.75 mm diameter and is great for finess shots but is gut-less when it comes to power. The I-2 at 12.5 mm performed much like a standard shaft. The I-3 at 13 mm had the power and the finess and is the best of the three in my opinion.

Maybe it's due to the enhanced radial consitancy the carbon fibre core gives it

Thanks for your input everyone :)

Radial consistency is something I was wondering about as well. I've been told that the OB is very consistent. My current stock shaft is quite the opposite, I turn it to a certain point every time before shooting. However if the carbon fiber core adds to the radial consistency of the I-shaft... :)

Again thanks for your input!
