Forgive my ignorance in these matters. I am but a humble beginer in these things..

I've managed to acquire a cheap shaft.

"McDermott I3 shaft-McDermott Quick Release joint, Railroad gold-silver collar"

Logically, and to my chagrin, it does not fit my McDermott cue..

Doh!

Is there a virtue in seeking the right butt from somewhere, if so, what should I be asking for/looking for or might I just as well bang it back on ebay and take any losses on the chin?

I'm in the UK btw - in case that is relevant.

Many thanks in advance!

shaft sale.

The high end McDermott cues have the quick release shafts. I have had numerous cue of the year cues and they all had the quick release. Found this picture to help out. If it does not fit your cue then sell it on here.

McDermott will only charge about $30 ($52 total with shipping, I think) to change the insert to your likely 3/8x10 and then ship it back...
Well, that's for the US...Check with Jayme Cernicka at McD. He is the man to talk to.
I personally had a local cue maker change an i-3 McDermott QR to a 3/8-10 for $35 and am very happy...maybe you can try that...an easy job for a decent cue guy and save yourself shipping to and from...
