McDermott QR

Anybody have an idea of what this thread actually is? I have a McDermott Cue of the Year with the McD quick release, and was thinking of making my own shaft for it, but I am searching the internet and having a hard time finding out exactly what thread pattern, and I am guessing I will probably have to contact McDermott themselves to get the brass insert for the shaft, unless somebody in here has any info/supplies available for sale? Thanks

McD, may have narrowed it down to one but there was a time not to long ago, they offered three, a short run on Uni loc-s which they will still do upon request, the others are a 3/8X16 and the 3/8X10.

I doubt you'll get squat from McD, particularly items of a proprietary nature.
If you do talk them into selling you one, they're like $12 IIRC.
Not being one to let a minor obstacle hinder me, I found an almost equivalent replacement.
One minor machine operation and they work perfectly.
Stop by my shop again and I'll give you one.

Do you alter the uniloc? Thats what I did to fit a predator shaft for my mcdermott. A guy owed me $ and he had the 314 and I figured it was kinda free because I didnt expect to ever see the money. Any way it worked, and I got to find out that I dont care for ld shafts

No, I don't alter a Uni-Loc. They are not to be toyed with.
Interesting story though.
Would you care to elaborate on what you did to make a Uni-Loc insert fit a 3/8x16 pin?
I can only guess.

Or maybe his McDermott is the 3/8X10????

 ;)   I've had these about 15 years from the Original owner of McDermott. They don't sell parts today because they depend on repairs just like we do to maintain their business. I can respect that. Have a nice day.

Once you face the uniloc pilot off, there is basically no 3/8-10 left or very little. Put a little chamfer on it and its ready for new threads. Both the uniloc and mcd have a 5/16 pin so that's already done. You might lose a thread or two of engagement with the chamfer but going to more threads per inch your not really hurting. If I had started with a partial shaft I then would have made a new insert altogether. This was a shaft that was basically free and worth the try.

And that actually was my guess.
Just for the sake of accuracy though I should speak to your numbers.
While the diameter of the blank-pin section for the Uni QR & the McD QR
is the same, they are .278", not .3125" (5/16").
Don't want to confuse the readers.
Also, the Uni TPI isn't 10, it's closer to 12. Now it gets tricky.
I don't know if Paul based the TPI on SAE or Metric count.
A metric 2mm & the SAE 12 are kinda close.
A 3/8x2mm would be a bastard though, even by metric standards.
What makes it more difficult is that the thread is a modified ACME.
Probably not going to find a tap for that one.

Thanx for getting back to us on this.
I actually was curious as to what your procedure was.

Pin diameter

Your probably right on the diameter, it was about 4 years ago that I did it. Might be my wife's cue that was 5/16 I had to mod an ob1 for her. That was just a boring bar for the peachaur quick release pin. Got a great deal on the shaft but it needed the slip fit for the quick release cut.
