mdf and non slate

Wood, whether solid wood or MDF, will change shape with exposure to moisture. Humidity could have devastating effects, if used for a pool table. Also, to avoid sagging, the frame would need to be very well supported, which would add a lot of additional cost.

Slate is preferred over granite, due to cost. Granite is much harder, and consequently more difficult to machine. This makes it much more expensive.
 
I think MDF kinda sucks because threaded screws pull out of it so easily. It is also very easily damaged by water or even just high humidity, it swells up then turns into dust when it dries.
