I was wondering exactly what a merry widow style cue is? What are its origins? Ive seen a few cues on different sites that have completely different styles but are described as merry widow style. Thanks

They are one step fancier than a plain jane. They have an unadorned forearm and a butt sleeve with some sort of inlays.

Well on cueaddicts.com they have a searing that is merry widow style. It has is fairly plain with cocobolo points and hoppe ring in the buttcap. There is a Tascarella on billiardcue.com that is just a plain jane olivewood and leather wrap. Is a merry widow just a plain style cue?

It's another one of those ambiguous terms in billiards. In my shop, a "Merry Widow" cue is essentially a "plane Jane" made of a nicely figured, usually exotic hardwood, with ringwork at all 5 locations, and sometimes including minimal inlays in the butt sleeve. Also in my shop, a "Merry Widow" cue will have a hard maple handle under the Irish linen wrap. Some cuemakers build a one piece butt version of a "Merry Widow" but personally I don't feel that's a good idea!

just more hot air!

A widow with a lot of batteries and love toy? :D

My definition as a cue buyer is something like this. Joss makes a couple examples as well. No points, some inlays in the butt sleeve, hopefully nice forearm wood.
