metal lathe for sale on craigslist

That's a nice machine, but kinda high pricewise, esp for not having a DRO and QCTP.

You can get the Grizzly 4003G gunsmith lathe with a factory installed Newall readout and Aloris toolpost almost 2k cheaper. Tommy D.

Because the grizzly is no part of what this machine is. It's in another class of machine all together. You can't compare apples to oranges and expect the same price. The 4003G is a benchtop lathe, not even close to as heavy, or heavy duty as a GH-1340w like the one the OP posted about. This is the difference between buying a Honda Pilot, compared to a Chevy Tahoe. Sure the pilot will get you where you're going, but I wouldn't try towing your 40' Scarab with the Honda. Similarly the 4003G you reference will not do the same quality work ie; surface finish, heavy cutting, production work, nor will it last as long under the same workload. The Tahoe is built heavy to hold up to heavy forces, just like the Jet is in this situation. There is a reason why a new 4003G is $3200, and the Jet is over $11,000

The only reason I posted to this is because the novice or potential new cue builders or repairmen that come on this forum and read these posts need to have correct information. Would you rather buy a $11,000 machine for $6500, or a $3000 machine for $4500 ? haha, that seems a little silly to me.

Now, with that said, I would highly doubt that this guy will get the $6500 for this machine that he's asking. I would say you could probably buy the machine for $5500 or less, just judging by the current market and area that he's in. I've seen these Jet's like this sell for as low as $3000 that are well used, but still good working machines that are still much more capable and stout than a 4003G. Machine shops commonly use this model of Jet lathe and I'd bet you won't find a single 4003G in any "serious" Gun Smith shop. I'll bet you will find a ton of them in the backyard "Gun Smith" hobby shop.

Just my .02
