metal pin/wood threads

I saw on some cues at VF a joint with the metal pin going into all wood (big) threads in the shaft. The ones I tried hit nice, but I was wondering if they hold up.

Is this a commonly used type of joint and would anyone have any reservations/observations about this type?

I don't know much about the construction end so any tech lite info would be appreciated.

they will hold up well , its been around a long time
used by McDermott , southwest , some schmelke's
and a ton of custom cue makers offer them at least as an optional
joint system

you could maybe , a remote posibility cross thread it but you could do that to almost any joint pin

I have a Tibbitts with this type of joint that has been in constant use since it was made in 1991. I'm having a new pair of shafts made, but it's not because the joint failed, it's because the diameter of the shafts is getting pretty small (right at 12.0 mm on one of them) from being slicked up and cleaned up over the years. The joint is still just as tight and solid as it ever was.

It is a 3/8 10 joint pin as long as the threads are cut right in the shaft which will be done the majority of the time I dont think they would pass any production or custom maker quality check if the didnt. But yes they hold up very well I prefer them!! Best hitting cues IMO!!

Thanks for the info everyone. I've been trying to come up with a good design, but it's tough. Because of my limited knowledge in cue construction, I'm not sure what all is possible and what to stay away from. I'm looking a an ebony/turquoise look with maybe a small bit of ivory.

I agree about the hit. Best hit by a cue I've ever played with.

I also prefer the wood to wood contact. I like the 3/8-10 and radial pins the best!
