metro 5mm shims

I was wondering if anyone had any dealing with the 5mm shims that brunswick is sending out for the giant pocket on the metro. My table is double shimmed now and the pocket are still a gigantic 5.25 inches. Thanks in advance for any info. Also how badly will affect the play of the table. Thanks again Rusty

5mm shims is brunswick's standard size facing. They aren't considered shims. If you want tighter pocket you need to extend the wood on your subrails.

If you extend the wood wouldn't you also have to extend the cushion to make up for the now longer rail. Couldn't you just stack two or more 5mm shims. And will these shims fit on a dekota 2 rail.

your correct you can. The problem is you will have about a half inch of facing material and not cushion, this will make a thud and not much response. if your not willing to pay the hundreds of dollars to have it done right doubling up the facings is your next option.

If you play one pocket you wont like doubling up the shims certian bank shots get played within the first inch of the rail... Also if the facing's are to thick when you shoot a ball into the facing it wont rebound right, it will just go thud like a dead rail with no give like a standard normal facing would .

I just had a customer that didn't want to pay for new rubber in order to tighten his rails the right way. He just wanted to triple up 5mm shims had 5-1\2" pockets So we put 5\8" thick facings on each side and it played so tight and dead that if it was my table I would have shot myself twice for listing to myself with agreement. The balls just sit in the jaws after hitting the facings with a hard or soft shot.

If you want to improve your game do it the right way the first time. You will always be happier in the end.

Plus, with the additional facings, if they're not cut accordingly, will not flushup with the face of your rail right, so you can have a bit of an arc from the points, which can extend out farther than the rail itself. Which will further affect the playability of the rails.

Extend the subrail, get it done right, save yourself alot of needless hassle.

I see what you mean. I have never liked that facing it's not even close to the same as the cushion it self. It sounds and responds different even some bad bounces off it when you hit the facing and cushion simeltaniously. I have always thought it was a poor design. What kind of cushions could I use when I replace my cloth that will also work with a extended subrail and not require a facing.

No facing= ball hitting into wood....... that probably wouldn't be very good for your balls or the ends of your rails.

Why isnt the facing the same material as the cushion durability I would guess. I can't hear or tell the difference between the cushion and where the facing material on the tables I play on in my league. Or the table I played on as a kid. It all just seemed to be the same. Do you know what I am trying to describe there is a vey distinctive difference on my table that I would like to get away from.

your playing on tables that have 1/8 inch facing. No the cushion facing is different than the cushion. what were talking about is going with a 1/4 inch facing and then adding another one, which makes a 1/2 inch of facing material. you will notice this, but if you don't then it would be foolish to extend the subrail.
