I was checking out a few cues the other day, and noticed the quality of cues from Viking/ Mcdermott/ and Meucci. The price range from $300 - $450.
Both Viking and Mcdermott show very consistant nice shafts with very few blemishes in the wood of the shaft. However the Meucci showed many knotts or discolorations in the wood of their shafts(red dot). The Shafts were inconsistant in size too some 12.75 and some even 12.5mm. Where are they getting their wood for their shafts? Or hows working the lathe's for the shafts?

Also the Viking and Mcdermott butts were the same consistant size, where as the Meucci varied in size from Butt to Butt some slightly thinner than others.

It this weird? What happened to the Meucci quality?

i live near the meucci factory and have been there a few times...im my opinion the reason that the quality has went down so much is because they no longer care about quality as much as quanity...they built a good name over the years and that's what they live off of now...the quality is nothing compared to what it was 15 years ago and to be honest i don't think bob meucci even cares...he just wants sales and that's all that matters to him...i wouldn't have one if it was given to me.

Meucci quality vs others

Spend your time on developing your game rather than analyzing cues, tips, chalk, cloth, balls, etcetera. All of it has absolutely nothing whatever to do with aiming accurately and consistently on each and every shot. That is what you should devote your table time to. Nothing else. Any cue in the world will outlast and out do any player.

the post was about a cue...not about shooting straight...i shoot plenty straight with any cue...but the question was about meucci quality...learn how to read and quit worrying about all that straight shooting

tap, tap, tap...railbird25!

I've also heard that Bob Meucci has lost his "customer service" and only cares about QUANTITY!!! Yes, Meucci cues look great, play well, but you're (IMO) only paying for a name. I sell cues, many cues lately, but only 1 Meucci in 9 months!! The quality has just slipped a little. I had a $340 Meucci cue with many inlays, but you could see gaps between the inlay and the inlay cutout in many places on one cue, the same cue, it also had minor blemishes or burns in the shaft. Other than that the cue looked great! haha!! I am in no way trying to BASH Meucci, just stating the facts and sharing what I've noticed.

About 10 yrs. ago I got a Meucci for about $400.
Meucci took his good ole time making it &
it looks great & plays great. If the quality
has slipped that much, it's really sad.
How about it, Mr Meucci,; if you're out
there ,get on this forum like Blud did
& defend your position. Have you sold
out?

Even back about 15 years ago the knock on Meuccis was that their joints were prone to cracking. I had one back then and had such a hard time controlling it that I sold it. About a year after I sold it, the guy I sold it to said the joint cracked and he threw it away. You could always tell a Meucci back then because the style of it was so unique.

Meucci Quality

Hi racer rx,

About twenty years ago, Mike Sigel walked into Ridge (now Classic) Billiards here with a new cue. His enthusiasm for the cue drove most local players to buy one. His explaination of the "man made" ferrule and joint and its effect on throw or deflection was right up there with the best "carny barker". I bought one, a DH-3 if I remember correctly, and played with it for years. I still have an entry level Meucci Original and use it for barbox. If its stolen or damaged, who cares. I compared it to some new Meucci's. I agree, they are not the same quality. I must have gone through one or more ferrules a year with the DH-3. I gave up on changing the ferrule on the newer one till the tip popped off and cost me some match money! I do not remember ever changing or repairing a joint.

As an aside, I bought a new shaft from Meucci during the early 80's. Mike looked at it and mentioned that it was as good as the shafts he receives. I called the factory and spoke with, I believe, Bob's daughter. I thanked her profusely for the quality. Her answer was "why is Mike complaining, he gets the best shafts!" Oh well.

I've been playing with a Schon for the last twelve years. I was immediately bothered by the linen wrap. Foolishly, I stuck with it. Three years ago, I asked Evan Clarke at Schon to duplicate the Meucci wrap finish on my cue. Perfection!!! I've been asked innumerable times about the wrap. Meucci rules on that one. I now have a one of a kind Schon.

I had a new Red Dot shaft made for my recently purchased Meucci... from the HP series. The original shaft had blemishes in the shaft.

I asked for a new shaft to be made... without blemishes or discolorations in the shaft. Also for it to be 13mm instead of the 12.75mm.

Well I got my new shaft today... it seems all Meucci did was to exchange my cue with another one that they had in stock. And
the new shaft has a big knott in the wood about 4" from the ferulle.

I looked at my girlfriends inexspensive Lucasi and the wood from that shaft looks like the cheap wood that Meucci are using too...
Could this Cue be made in Asia too? What happened to Meucci?

Is there such a thing as a decently made Red Dot shaft anymore?
Has anyone else had problems with recently purchased cues from Meucci?

Now your talking...:)
Can't go wrong with a Schon and a great idea on the wrap. A friend of mine has an older Meucci Originals and it plays great.

I bought a Meucci before I knew what to look at in a cue. I bought it on a reputation it had back when I was 16 or 17 and playing in a gameroom. That one is long since gone, but I played with one a friend was trying to sell the other night. It hits well and has a nice feel. I bought it because it was so cheap, but I wouldn't have paid retail.

I don't know what quality you guys are talking about.
I frequent a cue repair shop here.
Old ones or new ones. Meucci's contruction has a dubious reputation.
Unthreaded collars and ferrules made of plastic.
Cheap glue are also used on these.
Ask any cue repairman/cuemaker .
Meucci has given a ton of repair business to them.
Now if you want good production cues, I'd vote for Schon and Joss. Joss specially.

Can Joss me ordered with a 12.75mm ferrule? I'e only seen em in a 13.
I believe Joss comes with a 13.25MM tip now.
If you order one, I don't see why they can't get it down to 12.75.
Or just take it a reputable repair man around.

My friend only plays with Meucci's. I play with my Lucasi alot more now then i did when i got my Dominiak. Someone mentioned the quality of the lucasi shaft and I have 2 shafts and neither one of them have any discoloration or nots in them that you can see. I've played with Meucci's before and personally don't like them but to each their own.
