I have a new Meucci sneaky pete red dot. I'm wanting to remove the red dot from the shaft. Not because I plan on hustling people with it. I'm not that great of a player. I just want to for the theory behind it.

How deep in the finish is the red dot? Can it be sanded off without leaving a large ridge on the shaft? Has anyone done this before?

Any help is appreciated

I don't know how easy it would come off period, but you would definitely be scarring that part of the shaft to say the least. It is most certainly on/in the bare wood below any finish.

How about put a thin strip of tape around it (electrical tape)? If it sticks, you wouldn'nt know where the dot was, and it wouldn't affect playability, and you wouldn't be permanently damaging your shaft.

My goal was to make it look as "Sneaky" as possible. I considered sanding the entire shaft. That way I can get the green all the way to the joint and the joint would be less visible.

I'd also like to smooth the joints and make them more flush. But I do not have a lathe big enough for that. Unless I use my buddy's father's industrial lathe. But I don't want to do that.

I believe I recall feeling the red dot through the finish. I might just try an experiment with it to see if it works.

youre not going to make a 2 piece sneaky look like a house cue to anyone who knows better, if thats what youre trying to do. If youre trying to fly that low on the radar youd probably be better off going with something totally outlandish like a budweiser cue or something like that with a good shaft and tip on it.

I disagree. If anything you should do something to make the "Meucci" stand out more. You can't get more sneaky than proudly presenting your Meucci.

lol just depends on where you are...........in my area meucci isnt looked down on like it is on this board.

I'm just bored and feel like doing something different. I'm not out to hustle anyone. There is no point to sandbagging if your going to lose every set.

I actually thought about taking the ferral. Make it appear to be a slip on tip. Then sand the shaft down so it gets dirty all the way to the joint so it can draw attention away from the difference in wood colors.

Make it so a good player won't notice it? I know it won't happen. I can look at a stick and tell if it's good or not. I just think it would be interesting if I can make it look almost like a junk house cue.

At the shop I work at we sell "Georgia Bulldog" sticks. And many other collegic sticks. They are actually decent sticks. I would like to take one and put a "Smart" shaft on it. That would be a great hustle stick because it looks like it came from Walmart or Spencers. But plays great.

I myself like Meucci. I think it plays better than my shon. The only reason I got a shon is because I loved how it looked. I do believe they would make great break sticks.

But to each his own.

And has anyone actually taken the RED DOT off? I don't believe it's inside the wood. Just sitting on top of it.

It's red paint. Paint penetrates wood and red paint will noticably penetrate wood. How deep??? No guess. You could really screw up your shaft. Making the shaft bare and dirty will also make it sticky.

A couple of weeks ago I made a shaft for a Meucci and used the deco-ring off of the old shaft. I can't remember if it was a red dot or a black dot shaft but while turning it down to get the ring off I was surprised to see that the dot was an inlay and went in deeper than the insert.

Thanks RHNCUE. That is what I was wondering. I wasn't worried about messing up the shaft. If I did I would have just get another one. But I felt it would be neat if I really did make the ultimate sneaky pete.

Tommy-D. We had 2 Budweiser shafts come through our shop in about a 2 week period recently. One put a new tip on it. I don't know if it was a Lapro or a layered tip. I think he also got a new farrel.

I think Dick is right. I was told a while ago that the red dot is simply a red toothpick inserted into a drilled hole and then sanded flush. Don't know how true it is.

The ultimate sneaky pete is a guy named Pete who has a dozen different speeds to his game.

DZ cues I believe.

Just get a new shaft. Any decent maple shaft is the same as a red dot, ecxcept you have to find the deflection point yourself. Keep your reddot, as they are really exp. to replace and get a regular shaft for 100.
